Notes on a TCU/MULF to Combox swap in a MY2011 E93 M3

Customer wants to have BMW Apps in his 2011 E93 M3 with Assist and iPod adapter, however his M3 was produced before even the Combox was available to order, much less BMW Apps.

What to do?

Enter BimmerTech with its PnP Combox OEM swap kit...

- unplug and remove TCU and MULF OEM modules (E93 shown):

- plug and install OEM Combox Telematics to existing OEM connectors, antennas and cables, terminate extra MOST connection:

100% OEM, no wires cut or spliced. No faults, 100% reversible back to factory spec.

BMW Apps, the enhanced iPod/USB adapter (Album Art and iPod Out) and dual-channel Bluetooth are upgraded and functional, and then some:

- BMW Online:

BMW Live:

Weather:

Panoramio:

RSS:

Not shown: Google Maps Street View and Local Search

Notes:

1) First issue first: Assist account was not transferred to the Combox. That should be done by the customer and the dealer by following the OEM procedure of registering the Combox IMEI (replacing the TCU IMEI in the account) with Assist. Will update the thread with the outcome.

2) MyInfo will not work with BMW Live: Adding BMW Live will replace the Assist entries from the iDrive and thus MyInfo, however the Telematics portion of the Combox still is active and functional. Once the Assist account is transferred the SOS button in the roof console will be active and functional, however that will be the only way to contact Assist if BMW Live is activated. All Assist basic services will be active and functional once the account is transferred.

Customer was very happy. Work done.

Great work. I thought we had to pin out connectors? This sounds like it's just plug and play? How much does this cost?

+1, I'd like to know of the costs on this and if it's a PnP install using OTS components that can be ordered online (hint: PM me a part number, pretty please?).

Technic, I'd like to talk to you about your harness or if you've identified an ignition/retained accessory power lead in the TCU harness that can be used with an external amplifier on a base audio car.

If you have a HiFi system then the OEM remote signal is pin 10 at the OEM amp audio harness connector.

Hi,

This keeps on getting better. I do not see any mention of coding, I'm sure that is still required - correct?

What about a 2010 base audio car with no amplifier in the trunk? Does the TCU also use a RAP lead?

All MOST devices turn on by data message.

The 2010 Stereo system (6-speaker) remote turn on is pin 13 in the back of the OEM HU/iDrive:

Patrys,

How much will the PnP harness cost? Will it be for sale directly?

If you guys have a package to do a straight swap of USA tcu for combox telematics while keeping existing BMW assist account and no splicing of wires you will have a customer. Please let us know when this is ready!!!!!!

Does this require the Convenience Plan upgrade for BMW Assist to access the Internet features? My 2011 e93 has BMW Apps as a factory installed option and that requires the upgraded subscription plan to access this content.

Once all that is done -CIC and Combox retrofit- then you will need to activate/transfer your Assist account from the TCU IMEI to the Combox IMEI. Depending on how much Assist will actually do over just transferring the account access to the Combox, they may or may not activate the MyInfo feature (Google Send to Car) for you.

That will be something that you will need the assistance of your service advisor/shop foreman. Good news is that the activation/transfer of the Assist account to the Combox will have to be done at the dealer anyways so if you do not get MyInfo with the transfer you can request it right there while at the dealer.

Hi Technic!! Sorry I forgot to add that I retrofitted my TCU. I don't think I ever had an Assist account.

So I need to speak to an SA. I'm out of warranty. Shucks....

Warranty is irrelevant if you are doing all this...
