Quick question....

How do I find out if my E90 is fitted with 'telephone preparation' (SA640) ????

It doesn't have bluetooth, but I need to know if the wiring is there or not...?

Cheers

Easiest way is to ask the dealer. They have access to build data for every BMW there ever was.

Isn't that an E46 option where there is a cradle with wiring for power that sits beneath the armrest? I don't recall E90 having a "telephone preparation" option without bluetooth?

I phoned BMW yesterday and found out that my car does not have bluetooth prep installed or any of the associated wiring loom needed...

part kit I would need would be 84 64 0 398 228. This is £400 + vat, and labour to fit the kit is £800 + vat

it takes 6.5 hours to fit!

so its nearly a £2000 retrofit to have the BMW bluetooth installed into a car without it!

Dont think ill be doing that somehow!

Might be a dumb question but is it do-able yourself? Bet there's a HOWTO out there on it.

I think there quite alot of work involved....

I managed to get hold of the 'official' BMW instructions on how to do it and it looks like a job for someone more skilled than myself...

PM me your email address and ill send you the instructions for you to have a look at...

(in the mean time ill try and set up a link on here so everyone can see it.... Hmmm... how do i do that?!)

is it this one:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3540

?

From a quick search it looks like parrot do a bluetooth kit that you can get integrated with your steering wheel. Not sure about iDrive but I bet someone could fit that for less than BMW.

Alternatively what about one of the alternative BMW maintenance places that you see around - often seem to specialise in german cars (BMW + Mercedes) and can apparently service your car without affecting warranty. I bet their labour charges are cheaper. Either that or a local car hifi/phone installer - would they do it if you got the bits?

Yeah that's the one.

Getting quotes from other places is defiantly something I should do... but the 'ideal' situation would be for me to have the phone cradle in the armrest.

*As far as I understand its only when a phone is connected to the car via the cradle that all the phone book etc is fully integrated with the idrive... I don't think that function is achievable by connecting car to phone via Bluetooth* (correct me if im wrong)

This springs up another problem.... I have just got the new Nokia N95 and as yet BMW don't make a cradle's for it, hopefully this will change and ill be able to have my idrive and phone both working perfectly together....

The other thing to look at is cost... I doubt ill get the BMW idrive system for less that £1000 which is a hell of a allot of money for what is essentially handsfree... but then I am intending on keeping the car for 3 years....

My current car retrieves the phonebook via bluetooth (E46) - I've never connected it wired once, I'd expect the E90 bluetooth to work the same way. The only advantage of sitting in the cradle to my knowledge is to charge the phone also.

Have you got bluetooth coming on your M3 ? Surely once you get that you'll hardly drive the E90

Oh right... I'd rather it be Bluetooth aswell, so that's good news.

The M3..... that's an ongoing dilemma in my head right now....

For lots of different reasons I'm thinking of pulling out... money, work, baby on the way, buying something without driving it first, putting back moving house... and also the way im being treated at my dealership is putting doubts in my mind aswell...

Id be very doubtful if this time next week I'm still going to be a future M3 owner...

but that's a different story. which is also why im contemplating spending money on my 335.... and why Im really trying to find out about re-mapping it aswell.....

Sounds like some of the US remaps are mental on the 335i. I will definitely look to remap my 335d at some point I think.

I know where you are coming from re: money, baby etc. That's why I've ended up with 335d 4 door e90 and not a new coupe/M3.

If you are planning on keeping the car for a few years (3?) and can get a better deal on the install and you are saving all that M3 money then why not.

Be interested to hear if you find a way...I've often wondered if you bought a retrofit kit if you can find somewhere else to fit it. There must be lots of handy andy mechanics out there happy and skilled enough to do this but not charging BMW labour rates.

Yeah, its even worth going to a service guy that works in a BMW dealership to ask if he fancies any private work, cash in hand....?

Yeah if you can. Alternatively let's have a group meet in your garage and between us we'll do it Hopefully someone who is good at mods/retrofits would come along. I bet you can get the parts cheaper too.

I contacted Cotswold BMW through their website for blacklines and they immediately discounted the recommended retail price as it was an internet order.

I wonder if I bought the parts direct from BMW UK if they'd be any cheaper... (cutting out the middle man)

Can you do that?

Paul @ Cotswold BMW on Tel: 01242 257999 was who quoted for my blacklines - worth calling them/enquiring on their site to see what they can do the kit for?

Looks like you'd maybe need some BMW tools also e.g. to remove the aerial.

Im not sure.. its worth a try though....

I just went to see an ICE specialist in maidstone, handed them the official BMW installation instructions and he immediatley backed away...!

Apparently only BMW have the right program to re-program the idrive once all the wires etc have been installed...

He wasn't confident in trying it...

not a good start... but I will keep trying...

Just a recommendation, but you could buy a really nice GPS with bluetooth, for those prices. I'm not quite sure if that would help.

Whoops i Missed it, i see you already have idrive.

I'm not sure if this is a dumb answer, but are these the bits you are looking for?
