Can I sell my car without a V5C

I have taken the private plate off my car and have been advised as to the new registration number. New tax and MOT arrived today.

However the V5C will take up to 4 weeks.

The new owner will pay me via CHAPS for the car and wants to drive it ASAP.

All I am bothered about is him having an acident or getting points when the car is still in my name.

Is there any way around this??

My rather simplistic view on this is as long as he is happy and you're happy then fine. Depends how much of a trusting soul he is. Not sure what happens about the points/crash though as you wont have filled in the 'official' change of owner slip.

My experience of the DVLA and V5Cs is that you'll have it within a week but think different offices/holidays can take different amounts of time.

A V5 isn't proof of ownwership. But you will be the first port of call, if it gets a speeding ticket or worse. I take it you know the new buyer?

I am proposing to draw up a bill of sale stating that he takes ownership from when he takes the car it will show mileage, VIN, his name and address.

We will then both sign and date it.

I do not know him but he is prepared to pay the 32k for the car on the understanding that i send the V5C when I get it.

Ive done this a few times without any probs - both buying and selling.

DVLA does say however that you shouldnt do this, but i just put a note on the receipt saying that V5 will be posted when received (to cover him too in case police stop him) and that the buyer takes all responsibilities from the TIME and date he drives it away.

Make sure you put the time on it too.

Sounds perfectly reasonable mate. So long as he is happy and you are happy, then all good in my opinion. I've done the same thing in the past without issue. I take it that the car is sporting the original plate and tax disc with original number? If you did the change at your local DVLA office, the turnaround will probably be much swifter. My experience is that the V5 is back with me within 10 days.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I have agreed to do a bill of sale and will put the time on it also.

Matt - Hello mate, yes the new number has been advised and the private plate is on retention.

The car is going on Wednesday
