Moved to Chicago from Socal

I moved here from socal. the area i live is called Cabrini Green..

never lived outside of socal.. Everything comes new and first to me.

Got a studio to live, and found few autoshops like wsto.

before getting back to start modding, i have few questions.

My cali license expires on late august. how do i renew it? or how do i get a IL license?

Also where do i get a IL plate? or is it okay to just use cali plate?

Thank you.

You're going to need to go to the Secretary of State (equivalent to Cali's DMV). There you'll get your license and also plates with new registration.

Cabrini Green, eh? Not far from Old Town, Gold Coast, downtown, Wicker Park.... Lots of stuff to do around there. There's still some spots of shadiness in CG though, even after they've brought down the high rises, so be mindful of your surroundings.

You're going to need to bring some extra stuff to get your license. From the SoS page:

Quote:
I will be working in/moving to Illinois. How do I obtain a driver's license in your state?
Drivers moving to Illinois may use their valid driver's license from their home state or country for 90 days. You may obtain an Illinois driver's license or identification card only if you are becoming a legal resident of Illinois. If you have a valid driver's license from another state or country, you may use it to drive in Illinois throughout your stay, if you do not plan to become a permanent resident of this state. Illinois does not recognize the international driver's license. To receive an Illinois driver's license or ID card, you must provide acceptable identification to prove name, date of birth, Illinois residency, Social Security Number and your signature for comparison. For examples, please refer to the complete list of acceptable documentation.

To obtain an Illinois driver's license, you must successfully complete a vision screening, written examination and possibly a driving examination. The fee for an Illinois driver's license is $30 and is valid for four years. The fee for an Illinois ID card is $20 and is valid for five years.

You'll want to order some snow tires and wheels too, before December.

Haha yeah, but it's not THAT bad of an area now that the high rises are gone. The townhomes are still there, but the element of concentrated evil is gone. The surrounding areas are nice though, like Old Town and Wicker Park. There are still a bunch of shady areas, but it's on its way up. Chicago sees an area ripe for gentrification and that means $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Plus, Chicagoans seem to be pretty good at gentrifying areas. I can't say the same for other urban areas that I've seen try to do it.

Is it too late to go back? I'd gtfo out of this state in a heartbeat if I could. Although CA may be the one state in worse shape...at least no snow.

Meh, I moved here from SD back in '08. I like it here better. CA is broke as fuck and (IMO) so is their fucking culture.

Their weather is real nice though.

Welcome from me as well.

* Watch your tints in Chicago. I've heard they aggressively ticket for tints, even though state law now permits 35% on all windows (except the windshield). Reference the IL tinting threads for more info, apparently you can get out of the Chicago ticket but it's a hassle.

* Taxes/fees for IL stuff (DL, plates, etc) are *seriously* low compared to CA. I'd change as quickly as possible, but insurance in your part of town may be a bit spendy.

* Nice law in IL: get caught speeding, go to traffic skool, no tickets within 6 months, it's like it never happened. Catch: get a second ticket in those 6 months, they both count.

* Speed on the tollways is pretty high. 85+ not uncommon. In the city, not so much.

* Get winter tires for your ride.
