Brake pad question....

So I\'ve had my car for about 4 years now, got about 56k miles on the clock.

My front brake pads has never been changed since new. The rear brake pads were changes once by the dealership under warranty. I\'ve never had the \'brake\' light sensor come on.

My question is: should I just changed the front pads regardless? I\'m just very doubtful that the OEM pads lasted THIS long, or is that normal?

TIA

just get the dealer or a mechanic to inspect your front pads and measure the remaining thickness. I've read that the CBS is not always accurate and a visual inspection is good idea now and then.

Pad wear depends on your driving habits / conditions.

I have 78k miles on my car. Yesterday the dealer replaced my rear pads (first time). I had 4mm in pad thickness remaining and decided to do it now rather than risk ruining the rotors.

My SA says my rear rotors still have 1mm above the minimum and should last long enough to completely use the new pads.

My fronts still have 9mm, they've never been changed. My SA tells me the fronts have bigger brakes. Don't know if the pads are thicker.

I'd say my driving habits are pretty good, I don't EVER ride the brakes. If anything, I use down-shifting if I need to slow down a bit......then brake if still necessary.

But I should probably just change them for a peace of mind, huh?

if it gives you peace of mind, go for it. I still have plenty of wear on my fronts. I plan on having them checked again in a year. If you get your pads checked, you might have more wear left than you know. Maybe have them take a look before they install?

What does the iDrive and/or the dash computer read in terms of miles remaining?

Also, don't forget that you will most likely have to replace rotors as well as pads for a total of about $600 per axle at a dealer. And since you will get both audible and visual warnings when the pads are worn out, I fail to see the advantage of a prophylactic replacement.

I haven't checked the iDrive.....I'm trying to replace the pads before they're worn to the extent that will cause the rotors to warp......

iDrive says 1500 miles.....So that would make the OEM front brake pads last 60K+ miles?

Also, my rear pads worn out quicker than the front ones? They've already been changed by the dealer once......and it 2300 miles until the next replacement.

I thought the front ones would wear out before the rear, no?
