I work in London and the hysteria and rumours are rife. Have gone home this evening. Train station had more Police than usual. What was funny though was a train pulled in next to mine and two hoodies got off and were promptly arrested. Unless they had good intel I am not sure this is the best use of resource. Hopefully the 16000 officers on duty tonight will calm things down.

This is the society the general public have moldered over the years. Lets the police have some freedom to do what needs to be done use force without fear of critical hindsight.

I think that is a slur on scumbags, just round them up lock them up if they actually own anything, take it away, all of it so when the get out thy have nothing, the same as all the people who lost their homes and bussineses.

I feel sorry for the police, its not their fault society has failed so badly. Its a sad state of affairs when the youth of the country thinks this kind of thing is fun and acceptable. What ever happened to firm parenting?? I remember been hit with a slipper, wooden plank, and belt by my parents every time I did something that was deemed unacceptable, never did me any harm....

Didn't something very similar happen in Canada after a hockey match recently?? This together with the new financial crisis, maybe its time up for the west....may have to immigrate back to my home land soon

Sadly some Northern towns and cities are being subject to the same mindless violence, but only making the local news. We decided against going into Bradford centre to the cinema just in case. A sad decision to have to make. As a city that has been subject to riots in the past we felt that it could ignite. Terrible situation foranyone to have been caught up in as we were many years ago

The first person to appear before magistrates this morning, Teacher, Alexis Bailey, 31, of Wye Street, Battersea, south London, was committed to Wood Green Crown Court, along with the majority of others.

He pleaded guilty to burglary with intent to steal at Richer Sounds in Southend Road, Croydon on Monday. The BBC's Clive Coleman at Highbury Corner magistrates' court says his case is typical in that the magistrate committed him for sentence at the crown court. The reason for this is the magistrates' bench felt the riot was such an aggravating feature to the burglary that the crown court ought to sentence because they have additional powers. The magistrates felt that they had insufficient powers to sentence for a single count of burglary. They could only sentence for six months whereas that could be up to 10 years at the crown court.
