About to hit 50k in my car...

Back in April I purchased a 2008 328i - sports, premium, xenon, manual, and it was a CPO car and had 38k on it.
Fast forward to today, there is just under 47k on the car and I see myself staring at the odemeter daily - I realize cars are meant to be driven and I love driving mine, yet still want to baby it as much as I can. My car CPU tells me my car is due for service in about 2500 miles, right before I hit 50k - I know with it being CPO, I get an additional 2 years/60k (i think its 60k?) regardless, what things do I need to start worrying about now that my car is halfway to 100k? What kinds of preventative maintenance should I be doing? Is there some kind of checklist with life expectancy or recommended replacement timeframes? Also looking to have them do ANY type of work they can covered under the warranty - what is the best way to accomplish this? Thanks.

I know this is dumb question and is very vague, but what are ways to "clean" an engine..
I.E. - keeping up with oil changes prevents gunking buildup, using fuel system cleaner?, obviously can get your valves cleaned but that is some serious $, but what else? I have always been into cars, but not enough knowledge of under the hood componets other than basic and general stuff.

Our 325 will pass 100k this month. We currently plan to keep the car as a primary driver for another 5 years/100k.
Times that the car has left us sit - 0 Major maintenance events - 0 Unexpected maintenance - 1 (DMTL pump) Preventative maintenance - moderately aggressive fluid changes (see the various oil and fluid wars on this forum). Serpentine belt changed at 65k and battery changed in the spring, both because I wanted to change them on my terms. I also changed the spark plugs at 65k, but that was probably wasted effort. And that is it. What do you have to worry about at 47k? IMO nothing. The only serious issue that seems to be coming up on the Internet is the water pump, but all things considered you probably don't need to worry about that for another 50k. With regard to keeping the engine clean, just run high quality oil (any LL01 oil should do). Perhaps a bottle of Techron into the gas a tank or two before each oil change. I would not get creative in this area. |

Hmm, that is somewhat reassuring. I have heard from others 50k isn't too much of a deal, but this is my first BMW and i want to take care of it. What about spark plugs? Timing belts? ... items like that. Is there a list somewhere of the maintainence issues that should have already been taken care of up to this point - or a "checklist" of mileages or years that parts should be replaced?

When you change your own fluid half way through the service do not reset the service counter. Have the dealer change the fluid next while your car is on the initial coverage. |

Your car does not have a timing belt and the recommended spark plug change is 100,000 miles. Tom |

Oh yea, forgot BMW uses chains (I think?) instead of belts.. I assume no problems with this then.. and engineering is good.

I'm glad I found this thread. My CPO warranty expires in a few months, and I'm approaching 100,000km (60,000 miles-ish). I'm thinking about some sort of preventative maintenance, but I don't wanna go overboard. In my old car, I spent a little too much on preventative maintenance, only to sell the car soon after.
The only things I do now are what the computer tells me, plus the cabin air filter DIY every year, and more aggressive oil change intervals (every 6 months, regardless of mileage). The engine air filter hasn't been changed since I bought the car over 2 years ago, so I do plan on doing that with my next oil change (anyone know the change interval for it?). Car has been great so far ![]() |

Engine air filter is not a separate CBS item, it is changed during the main service inspection which I believe is every 30,000.
30 minute DIY for the air filter: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4101 Clean the MAF sensor when you change the air filter, it is documented in that thread as the MAF sensor is in the air filter plastics; kill two birds with one stone. |

Any issues with the water pump yet? You seem to be closing in on that magical number of miles where that thing is going to go out...

Not completely. It will give you the "I'm about to explode" light first to give you time to stop. It will also store codes that you can't see without a scanner. If you're getting low pump rpm code, that's the sign its about to go. These cars have plenty of cooling capacity even in the hottest climates. If you get a "yellow" overheat, that's a sign of a bad pump.

I'm not too worried about it.. whatever happens, happens. The climate here varies a LOT though, so either I'll get stranded one day on a very hot day, or a very snowy and cold day. |

158K on my wife's 325i now. Follow the maintenance schedule in you manual and repeat it.
The only exceptions to the manual is that I made was to have the Trans fluid changed at 60K and again at 100K and about ready to do it again. This 06 E90 325i has been the most dependable car we have ever owned, but it has been maintained well with the best products, and it's paid for.... ![]()
