BMW "iPhone Station & Link" thread......

Thought I would start a thread on this as it is now out in Germany.

This is the iPhone docking station that gives you BMW connect, Internet, Music and Bluetooth in your car.

Know facts so far.

Unit is €199 and the fascia on the X1 is €50, but presume it will be the same tray used on the 1 series as they do for nav portable so around 40.

You can also add full Euro nav for €49.

Available for 1 series, 3 series and the X1 and X3.

Fitted to an X1....

I was sent the install instructions over this morning but told not to give them out yet.
So here they are.......

BMW iPhone Station Install Instructions

Be interesting to add comments and info as we get them to this thread.

Sure it will work without coding, however manual selection of aux will be needed, where as it will automatically select it when coded. My guess anyway.

Not available in UK yet. 15.08.2011
But is available from Germany.

However, the software is not available from the UK App Store either, so no real point ordering from Germany as yet.

Not sure how many will fancy this in the E9X as it is no where near as neat, but copied this thread from the 1 series forum anyway.

I'd consider this for my E92 as I was looking at retrofitting 6FL and bluetooth whereas this would give Nav as well. I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks before making a final decision though.

If you look at the install instructions a bracket is installed behind the vent trim so that the phone sits above the vents.

You can fit it where you like, you would just have to extend the cables.

I think I would fit it further back on the dash, on the trim piece that goes over the centre speaker on L7 cars.

I hardwired a Sony Nav-U to that piece of trim in my old E91 a few years back....

Garage List
That's very good for 1er and X1/3 drivers without ProNav. For the money I think is great in fact !

That looks neat but I think I may struggle to comfortably reach the screen.

Any idea if the kits are available to preorder in the UK yet? Also do you know if the cradles can be purchased seperately for if you upgrade phones?

I am keen enough on this that I would go back to an iPhone from my HTC Andriod!

I spoke to the dealer where my BMW came from yesterday about the iPhone Station and Link.

In regards to Link and the bits that install in the car he said the following.
"The part are on the system but with no part numbers to order against". He said he also sent a request to BMW Technical for more information about this. Once he calls me back I will post it for you all.

The big question about when we are likely to get this in the UK? The answer was, "it will be soon".

Stay tuned.

Cheers

D

As I said, it is waiting for the Link Software to be finished in English, they will then release the parts.
You can order from Germany now if you want to get it installed ready......

But until the software is available and it can be coded then no real point.

I spoke to my dealer y/day (Douglas Park, Hamilton) about this - "available end September" was the reply. And no pricing yet. Plus they didn't call back with the requested costs for the iPod / USB adaptor. So...fairly meh.

Does anyone have a spec for the standard iPod / USB adaptor, in terms of what it does?

e.g. Does it display a track list on head unit? (I have the Professional H/U, no nav).

Does album / track selection work in the same way as an MP3 CD?

Does a new source appear alongside CD/Radio/AUX?

The kit will be 200 and then you will have to buy a bracket depending on your car.
Around 50 for the 1 series and the X1 etc.

Which iPod usb kit??
Probably best to post that in a new thread, this has been discussed at length over the years on the forum.

I have been talking to someone at BMW North America customer relations about the iPhone4 dashboard cradle for about a month as she took my questions to various engineering and marketing people and came back with the answers. Today she told me that the dashboard cradle will not be offered in the U.S. BMW will not provide information as to whether the European unit will work in U.S. cars and will not say that installing it will not i) require coding by a dealer that it may not be able to do ii) cause damage to other wiring in the car. I had also asked if the Navigation Pro wiring harness and bracket, designed for a NUVI 760 Garmin, could be used with more current Garmin models. Again, BMW has not tested any other models and therefore won't answer the questions.
