Valentine 1 install on E90

Does anyone know how to hardwire V1 to our E90? I found this thread from an E60 forum. http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=708

Can we hardwire the v1 in the same way??

Yes, I was hoping somone would post this as a "how-to". I may do it myself when I get around to ordering my V1.

I have had the front dome light fixture out, and it comes out in one piece, unlike on the E60 (5 series). There appears to be lots of room up there for the power module, and I am sure that there is a wire that can be used for key-on power only. I didn't spend too much time looking at wires when I was in there, but I am sure it wouldn't be too hard to find a +12V wire.

There was a harness for the sunroof power and also for the dome lights themselves, as well as the self dimming/compass mirrors if you have them. There is also a nice place for the wire to exit right in front of the rear-view mirror, so finding the right wire should be the only challenge.

Please, if anyone installs or gets it installed, have your installer (perhaps yourself) take a picture of the correct wire they are tapping for the power lead. Then please post the picture for the rest of us. I am sure everyone would be much obliged.

I wonder if it is the same color wire in the E90 as the 60?

I know there is some tech guy that knows the answer to this.

E90 Valentine 1 hardwire install

Okay to answer the original poster's question...I used the green wire with white stripe from the rear view mirror wire bundle. It is a switched power source. My only issue came in finding a ground up in the overhead console. I used one of the two bolts that holds a sub structure to the frame, but had to sand off some type of coating off of the bolt before it would make a good clean connection to the ground wire. Also it's a real pain to get to either of those 2 bolts. Sorry didn't take any pics.

Thanks for the infor, racyb. So the 2 bolts you mentioned will be the only grounding place that we can find?

Excellent info! Thanks!

Although I'm too afraid to do this myself -- I've never been too good with tools (or sports, or any other butch-hetero endeavors, for that matter)... Anyhoo, does anyone have an idea of where I could go in/near San Francisco to get this done "professionally")... Thanks!

It is the only 2 that I was able to find. There are a few more torx screws, but couldn't get a ground from them because they didn't seem to screw into the upper frame.

Also becareful of the headliner while trying to push in the tabs for the overhead console, it can get damaged and dirty real quick
Either put a piece of cloth down between your tool and the headliner or clean your instrument meticulously. Also washing your hands would help

One more thing, I used some double sided 3M exterior strips to mount the V1 control module to the black plastic beam and roof frame to avoid any additional rattles. The rest of the wires were zip tied and tucked neatly into the space just to the right (passenger side) of the overhead console.

Now I wish I had taken those pictures, but it is very easy once you know which wire to tap into and get the ground working.

Any good (read: reputable) stereo installation shop should be able to do this for you. Now that we have confirmed the correct wire (thanks to racyb), you can let them know which one it is (green with the white stripe) so they don't go butchering your wiring harness looking for a good power lead.

Just ask around about installation shops, and then talk to them about hardwiring the V1, and as long as they know what you are talking about, you should be fine.

I'd be happy to give it a try (using your car for a guinea pig, so I have experience when I do mine ) but I won't be up to the city for at least a month. I live about 4 hours South of SF.

Racyb, thanks for sharing your experience with us. Did you have a wiring diagram or anything, or did you find the correct wire through trial and error? Thanks.

Just going to jump in here and say that I think it's the same color wire as the E46 and E60. Maybe that's how they knew how to find it.

No problem, I am glad to always help. Yes, while looking through some E46 and E60 DIY write ups, I noticed they all had some sort of green wire as the switched source. I figured I would give it a try as there is only one green wire in that rear view mirror bundle. Fortunately it worked and I didn't have to tap into any others.

Do you have any pictures of removing the front dome light fixture? How does it remove as one piece?
