Service Engine Soon Light = Sputter
I was on my way home from the Bucs Patriots game last night and heard what quite possibly could have been the loudest S2000 (if not car) on the planet. So I downshift to catch up and and all of a sudden my Service Engine Soon light came on and the car started sputtering. I never knew what you guys were talking about by "limp mode" but I'm assuming this is what you are talking about. I was probably only at about 50-60% throttle when it happened.
I woke up this morning and started the car and no service engine soon light upon start up but I did notice a strong exhaust smell. I let the car warm up and gave it about half throttle at about 50 mph and the same thing happened. Service engine soon light and sputtering. The car has 37,500 miles on it and I am not nor have I ever been tuned. The HPFP and injector recall was taken care of about 6 months ago. Thankfully, my warranty expires in 5 days so it will be covered and I am going to try to get into my dealership today if possible. What do you guys think could be the issue? |

Did it shutter/shake when you gave it power or did it simply run smooth but with degraded power? The former sounds like my misfire, the latter sounds like limp.

Mine had no shake, just the decreased power.

Just happened to me last week on my 335i with 48K miles. I was accelerating and it briefly felt like the engine was missing, like a plug wasn't firing and the SES light came on. Turned out to be the ignition coil and O2 sensor were bad and were replaced.

Sounds very similar to an issue that just came up for me today. It runs fine until +3psi and higher, then sputters with very little power throughout the power band. SES light flashing. If I accelerate at 70% throttle from 0-80mph, it will run especially rough for 1-2 minutes afterward, then improve slightly. I'm not getting any codes on procede's software. I'm out of warranty so I'm hoping I can diagnose/locate a bad coil and/or O2 sensor on my own. I did a DP install 200 miles ago, which involved unscrewing the O2 sensors, loading the wires with lots of torque. I'm worried I damaged the wiring on one of those sensors.
-2008 335xi AT 51k miles -Procede v5 rev2a -Map 6-14 -updated to 7-29 maps & adaptation resets with no improvement -catless DP's installed 200 miles back - ran great till today. -Chevron injector cleaner used 1500mi back -Oil change 200mi back |

I've had this happen 2 times and i never had it diagnosed. The first time was just before i fixed a vacuum leak. Didn't happen again for a while so i figured the vacuum leak was the cause. Last time it happened was just before i did a fuel treatment and it hasn't happened since. I'm waiting for it to happen again and i'm taking it in for diagnostics.
