Extended warranties

Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket extended waranties that are not complete ripoffs. I am wondering if any of them are worth the paper they are written on?

Look dude this just happened to me. I got the platinum extended warranty and $50 deductible. I had an oil leak at my engine and the total repair was $3500 so I took my car to the dealer were I got the extended warranty and SURPRISE!!! They denied the repair and CANCEL!!! sorry VOID!!! my warranty just because I have 19" rims. They told me that the wheels aren't the ones recomended for my car and 19" change the reading of the speed by the cluster and that void the warranty. So if you already mod something in the car you are going to get very disapointed when something happen to your car or if you want to take the risk just put the car back to oem (stock) before you take it in for any repair. Save your money and just get to be a friend of one of the mecanics.
NOTE: I'll be posting all the details and info of my journey in the next two weeks.

Are you serious?!!!?? Did you get the "ultimate protection" bmw warranty ? Why did they cancel this over 19" rims? That doesn't make sense.

I have a different warranty then the BMW one. I paid 3600 and I do not have a deductible. So far so good fixed everything that was wrong with it for free. And that is taking it to the BMW stealership. I believe its national warranty that I have. I can double check and let you know.

AAA offer extended warranty, since its from AAA, it may be ok, although I have not used them nor know much about it. however, their price isn't cheap, I was quoted $2800 to have the warranty covered for 2 extra years and up to 80000 miles. IMO, might as well buy that from BMW, or get your car certified, its may be even cheaper and for sure safer.

I don't have experience with BMW but I had the extended CPO warranty on my Audi and it was great. Never had any issues getting things fixed. The last thing I had repaired would have cost over $1k but I only paid $50.

SexyMexy - I thought the MMAGNUSON-MOSS WARRANTY ACT OF 1975 states they have to prove the aftermarket part caused the failure. I fail to see how 19" wheels (which BMW also sells) caused your oil leak. I'd fight this tooth and nail.

I'd have them do the work and then sue them in small claims court. I don't know where Sexymexy lives but it's $10,000 for Travis and Bexar County - I don't know if all counties have the same limits.

Sexymexy, they'll fold like a cheap suit and reimburse you for the work. You can read my small claims experience here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=446367

Which dealer was this? The service manager is a douchebag.

Yeah, that's rediculous. I can't believe any dealer would not be aware that there are laws covering warranty coverage. They absolutely have to prove the damage was caused by aftermarket parts.

I have one question that I've been wanting to ask. Do I HAVE to get the extended warranty BEFORE my factory warranty runs out? Or can I get it after?

Before for gold and platinum. You can get powertrain plus after you're out of warranty. Brochure can be downloaded from this website: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...rotection.aspx

That is complete BS. Your readings will only be wrong if you have the wrong tire size. If your overall diameter and circumference have remained the same, then you've altered absolutely nothing in your mileage, cluster, etc.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Enter your OEM size and the size you're running now to see if you're in spec or not.

I just got a bumper to bumper for 3 yr/36,000 miles for a little over $3,000 with Century Service Plus. My buddy had the Mini extended warranty and they would not cover a plastic oil line that broke. $1,500 in labor for a cheap plastic line. I called these guys and they said it was all covered with the Comprehensive plan. They have 4 levels of coverage available.
The CPO coverage is just powertrain and most electronics.

the MM only applies to factory warranties. It doesn't apply to extended or aftermarket warranties. In fact most aftermarket or extended warranties have something in the contract stating they can deny coverage fir just about anything including aftermarket parts or mods.

Matter of fact, my first BMW had BMW's "gold" extended maintenance program. When the car had an issue with a covered coolant system issue, BMW denied the coverage due to the aftermarket (winter) wheels I had on the car. Even though they were the same size as the stock wheels.

Another friend of mine had his car denied extended "gold" warranty coverage for a problem with I believe his differential. They denied his coverage because of the aftermarket carbon fiber hood.

There was a gentleman I worked with who had an aftermarket warranty from GM on his car, and there was a serious problem with the engine (cracked cylinder) and they denied his coverage by claiming he wasn't changing the oil every 5000 miles as recommended. He did his own oil changes and even though he had receipts and a book of when oil changes were done, they claimed that could have been for any car, not necessarily his.

It states in the BMW extended warranty contract that they can deny coverage for a large variety of reasons including ANY alteration of the vehicle from stock, not following BMW's recommended maintenance recommendations, using non-BMW parts for repairs/replacements, etc.

Now, that's not to say that there aren't plenty of people who have their car fixed under the extended warranty, but you need to realize that pretty much every aftermarket warranty (actually called a "service contract") has these types of clauses in there, and they can deny coverage for some very petty and even made-up nonsense. These service contracts have very broad sweeping exclusions in them. I might suggest you read it more carefully if you think I'm blowing smoke up your bum.

The fact is there are laws that prevent the above you are mentioning. They CAN NOT deny you coverage on something that has nothing to do with an aftermarket part.

I have talked extensively with my SA here and he has seen my modded to the gills BMW and told me the same thing. And that they would not deny me coverage if the problem was not caused by the aftermarket part.

If a dealer tries to do this, they are idiot/assmunchers and you can fight it, period.../thread
