These are now pretty cheap....

OK, the engines are prone to going pop, but look at the price

(these are trade values - but there are cars like this up for not much more on AT now)

Did you use that link you gave in another thread?

I punched in a few registration plates and the trade in values were scary to see the least.

Apparently my old Astra Gsi turbo on a 03 plate is only worth 900. If I could but one for that I'd have a new toy.

A good engine gets 1500 without the car.

Yes, this is from the CAP one. There are some C4S on AT with 100k+ miles up for around 16k - so a trade of 13-14k for 90k miles seems about right. They are trade values remember, not private or retail sale which are higher.

Yeah I got that, but 900 is about 25% of it's private sale value.

True, but the turbo and 4S still look pretty good IMO.

What else competes as a package at 15k (ignoring the risks for a minute - just imagine you'd take a gamble).....

They don't look good though. They look pretty shit! Turbo gets away with it slightly because of what it is. (but only to people who know)

I'd much rather a 993.

RE the 15k: I'd rather have a more reliable, more modern and faster 335!

Oh and Turbo's are no where near 15k

James, if you are tempted, I think places like Hartech can do preventative maintenance to avoid IMS/RMS failure which would give total confidence in the engine. Worth considering. I agree with Carl that 996 is looking dated, but the TT and 4S can stil cut it.

I don't really think it looks that long in the tooth. I would like one and I could afford one. Would I buy one?

Would I feck.

The less special models of cars like this hit a certain age/price then you practically have to give them away. The running, maintenance and potential big repair bills put all but the completely naive off.

How much do 993s go for in comparison? I'd have a 993 turbo in a heartbeat

They have been commanding a large premium over the 996 models for a while now. Last time I looked a decent 993 Turbo was 40k plus.

I've always been put off by the IMS and cylinder scoring horror stories, but I'm now starting to see these in a new light as;

a. 13-14k is seriously cheap
b. If they get to 80k+ then that is perversely a good sign that they may last
c. Hartech and others, esp in Germany, are finally it seems making progress at solving the causes of engine weaknesses & the big bills.
d. the fact they are not very modern doesn't matter - still much nicer than any BMW.
e. 993s are great but a lot more, plus I wouldn't sell my 1985 3.2 Carrera, so this would be a second 911. It has to be a bit more modern for the wife....

So, the fact that most are put off opens up a nice opportunity if you go in with eyes open and manage the risks - though I know the risks are high (new engine 10k)

Also in terms of 'giving stuff away' look at the value if a 2000 model 330i to see something truely worthless - coming to the e9x soon I'm afraid...

100% agree, although (as had been said) 993s, especially the turbo, demand serious cash.

I'd worry about paying forty-odd grand for a car that's over 20 years old with known issues......

Yes, but it's SUCH a beautiful car

I don't actually like 911s that much, I find them too sterile.

However, there are two exceptions -

1) 993 Turbo
2) 997 GT3 RS. Still the best road car I've ever driven at the 'Ring

If I could, I'd buy the GT3 RS right now. Grrrrrr, I have such a hard on for one now!

Yes it is, sounds great too. The last of the proper 911s IMO

Gen 2 looks like the engine might be ok - but they are still 40+k

All 996 Turbos and GT3 have old style 964 derived engine blocks so don't have the same issues.

The other way to look at a 996 C4S is that it's only worth just over 2 years depreciation on a brand new loaded 335 - then you could throw it away......bonus if it's still running. Yeah ok not quite, but interesting.

I don't think ANY 911 looks dated. They all look brilliant, even now - They have class the 3-series could only dream of IMO. For sub 20k - you're not going to get great deal performance - but they're still VERY fast in the real world.

Tony, can you close this thread down, I don't need any temptation for an 'affordable' 911 .
