Adaptive Headlight Issue - Right side pointing straight down??!!

This happened out of the blue. Started the car last night and noticed that my passenger headlight was pointing straight down to the ground...maybe 4 feet in front of the car while the driver side is completely normal.

During start up BOTH lights still move up/down, left/right but the right side is much much lower than before. They both still turn with my steering wheel.

I was able to manually adjust the right side so that its almost there it use to be but its already maxed out and i'm sure its not how it is suppose to be set.

Is there a simple reset procedure for these lights (with the BT tool) or is it time for a dealer visit?

Thanks
Alan

It is time for a dealer visit, but you may be charged for the repair because:

1. it may have been caused by a pothole impact (most common cause for this issue in addition to lowering your car)
2. Your attempt at self repair. Quite simply, the screw you adjusted didn't turn itself down all the way by itself - why did you think turning it up would fix it?

No.

When the light becomes damaged it automatically points down to stop you from blinding other drivers. Needs to be reset at dealer.

1. Haven't hit anything recently but who knows. I do live in NYC.

2. I had to raise it up because it was a safety issue for me driving with one headlight beam at night. I will lower it back down to how it was prior before going to the dealer. If bmw tries to give me shiet for that I would raise hell. bmw put an adjustment knob right on the headlight for a reason.

Happened to me too. Hit a pot hole and brought it to the dealership. They replaced the entire head light assembly.

Hi, I had the same problem and I just came out of my garage after spending a few hours fixing it. In my case it was the control arm that came off the xenon light bulb assembly, you can check that by looking with a flashlight in the headlight between the signal block and the xenon assembly, if you see a black + shape thing next to a white circle shape that is the the problem, should be inside the white circle. I had to remove the front half on the wheel fender liner to get access behind the headlight to unplug the electrical connectors and to remove the two bolts that keep the bumper attached to the fender. I pulled out the headlight washer nozzle to remove the caps. Next you have to remove the four bolts on the top of the kidney grills and the bottom ones from the splash shield. The bumper cover should come right off now. The headlight washer hose will have to come off the washer, it will be a good idea to clamp them because the fluid will drain. With the headlight removed you have to get the signal led block out and the xenon bulb cover, you will see then what I am trying to explain. With one hand hold the xenon assembly in place and with a long screw driver try to pry out the control arm to force the + shape inside. I did my best to explain how this works, english is not my first language. If you have troubles following this PM me and I will send you the scanned pages of the Bentley Manual for the headlight removal.

Good luck...

Ohh, and check both sides. In my case only the driver side was pointing down but when I looked at the other side I had the same problem.

^^ Thanks for the info!

When yours was pointing down, did the adaptive motors still work? as in did your lights still moved up, down, left right?

My car is at the dealer now and the tech told me that they didn't have to replace my light but rather they just needed to be realigned by the bmw GT1 computer. He said that it can get knocked out of alignment from potholes and bmw will only replace the whole light if it popped out of the socket like what yours did.

I could see them moving up and down but little or no left and right movement. I don't know why they wold replace the headlight but maybe there is something else faulty that causes the control arm to pop out. I hope mines stay like this right now. I will keep my eyes on them.

This is my theory, i've never proven this:

The suspension has sensors to adjust the headlights to point up or down. when you accelerate hard, the rear suspension differs in the front and back and adjusts the light accordingly.

It happened to another guy that hit a pothole with right side and his right light pointed down. it probably points down when no sensor is detected by default because if it pointed up, and it happened on the road, it would potentially cause a collision by blinding an oncoming driver.

So if my theory is correct, then one of the sensors is gone.
not necessarily because you hit a pothole, but maybe it just went dead.

The xenon housing points down when pops out just because of its weight not because the motor makes it point down. It is heavier towards the front because of the magnifying glass.

My car also has this problem where the adaptive motors will work but the right side xenon is pointing at the ground. Did the bmw GT1 computer do the trick?

Nope. Pissed! The computer simply maxed out the adjustment but it is still way lower than before. On my drive home I could only see on car length infront of me. Need to go back for a whole new light.

I had the headlight issue happen to my 09 several times. And it was both headlights that would point straight down. Dealer replaced both headlights 3 times !!

Was it after hitting a pothole? Did they still move up/down side to side?

No pothole. They basically just sunk down. They moved side to side and on start up they moved up and down but in my case no matter what dealer tried lights returned to sunk position so there solution was change everything
