CDV Delete + Pre-15k mile Oil Change: DO IT!

If you have a 335i, I highly recommend you do the following two things:

CDV delete- had it done yesterday at a local shop. Without a doubt, it is the highest value for dollar mod I have done. The 6MT just feels so disconnected with the CDV in place. I can now modulate the clutch properly via feel so I don't feel like a tool who can't drive stick. Earlier, during spirited driving, unless I consciously disengaged the clutch a split second before releasing the gas (during an upshift), I would get my head snapped forward since the clutch didn't disengage in the same linear, predictable fashion as every single other stick shift I have ever driven and therefore resulted in me releasing the gas before the clutch was disengaged so I effectively engine braked for a split second during the upshift.

Before the CDV delete, I questioned my choice of a 6MT over a paddie-AT, but now there is no doubt I did the right thing. More importantly, I think the inability to modulate the clutch contributes to a lot of 6MT owners being unable to match the paddie-AT 1/4 mile times. It's damn hard to prevent wheelspin when you can't really tell when the clutch is going to engage.

One tip: Be careful how much fluid you let drip out. We let so much drip out that the clutch ended up snapping to the floor and it took about half a master cylinder's worth of bleeding to get any feel back.

At 7,000 miles, I decided to change out my factory oil to Mobil 1 0w-40. Before I did so, the engine made that funky rhythmic humming noise that everyone said was normal. Fellas, it ain't normal. The oil change got rid of that noise.

Additionally, my car would hunt around between 550-800 rpms at idle. I thought my fuel pump was hiccuping. I was scared out my wits that one day I'd be driving an investor around and my E92 would decide to give up the ghost. Again, the oil change got rid of that rough idle.

In short, BMW's 15,000 mile change is a joke. I am a huge fan of Mobil 1 since I have other vehicles that have gone over 200,000 miles with it, using 10k intervals. BMW's oil is a Group III hydrocracked while Mobil 1 is a true Group IV oil. I'm still going to take advantage of BMW's 15k oil changes but I highly highly recommend doing your own change in between the BMW changes. And if you're cheap, Kragen/Checkers/Schucks has a special on Valvoline SynPower 5w40 oil (BMW LL-01 approved as per the valvoline webpage). It normally sells for $6.19 a quart and it's now selling for $0.99 a quart.

Needless to say, I loaded up.

I did my first oil change at 1200 miles and the oil was pretty dirty!

I'm waiting for it to hit 7-8000 miles before the next oil change and the CDV mod.

Do your CDV delete ASAP. Trust me, once you do it you will be wondering "why the hell didn't I do this earlier?!?"

And I didn't do the modified CDV. If my tranny blows up, they will probably take everything apart and take a look at it - including seeing the bored out modified CDV.

ADHD - go to www.kragen.com and look for your local store and then look at the weekly specials, page 2.

Yes very wise of you to change the engine oil and filter at the first 1200 miles.

BMW M models (E46 M3, E39 M5, E60 M5, M6, MCoupe/MRoadster) have a requirement to replace the engine oil, transmission oil, and differential oil on it's first 1200 miles.

I plan on doing the same thing too and change the engine oil every 7000-7500 miles with ELF Solaris LSX 5w-30 (LL-04)

Thats because those models actually run a special "break-in" oil in the beginning

I'm no slacker with a manual tranosmission, but I don't like grinding gears and tearing through the transmission - someone mentioned that b/c of this CDV that MT owners can't match the 0-60 times of the AT's....

Without the CDV I don't think I could match the AT's time. In DS mode the AT shifts faster than I can - you ought to hear it, big difference in shifting speed from D to DS mode.

Im lost. What do you mean by you "didnt do the modified CDV". Do you have a link explaining this? I read a while back that you had to order a gutted part to make this work. Can I just do this myself somehow?

You can just take the CDV out, as Longtran has done, but it will leave that exposed so the dealership may find out if they ever have to look at the work that is being warrantied that may be tied to clutch issues.

The bored out CDV looks stock so it looks the same as the day you bought it.

I got my oil change early because it's a turbo'd car and the oil on turbo'd cars are nasty only even after not so many miles.

Yes, its a great idea. Im going to go do it now to my 10 yr old M3 because I never knew it had it. Its my understanding that one clutch would be under replacement if its not under a certain amount of miles. DO NOT teach people to drive stick in this car. Have them rent a manual car. There are rentals just for that purpose.

hey Jon! Were you planning on doing the transmission and differential oil changes as well after break in?

I changed my engine oil at 2200 km, 7500 km, 12500 km, 21000 km, and 28750 km... I now have 32000km on my car and am still thinking about the manual transmission and differential fluid changes. The thing that has stopped me is largely the fact the that the manual transmission has an actual sticker right on it that says not to change the fluid.... obviously I care about my car and want to do the appropriate thing!

I have steptronic and I am not going to touch that. For the differential I am going to change it and add Redline 75w-90 gear lube.

Would this be the noise everyone hears around 1500-2000 rpm?
