Hard to let go of ye olde M3 after getting the 335i, anybody else still holding on?

I got my e92 335i 4 months ago. I've had my 1997 180K miles, E36 M3 for 5 years now, it's what started my love affair with bimmers, the E36 needs some love and dedication. There have been great times with the "purple penetrator" ( my friends named it because is techno violet) and compared to the 335i the E36 is raw and fun! I drive the E36 during the week for work and the 335i is my weekend driver.

I keep telling myself this is the week I'll put it up on the classifieds, but I still haven't.

Anybody else still holding to the car you had before your e90?

Wanna adopt an E36 M3? =)

Why not keep it? You don't need collision for sure, maybe comp since it's cheap, and you're not going to get much for a 97 M3. My cousin got 4600 for his 95 M3 3 years ago. Who needs that 3-4k when it's something you like? My cousin had over 240k so you have quite a bit of mileage left in yours. Then again my cousin totaled his repair bills and it came out to 26k. That's what separates the Japanese from the Germans.

Sounds like you need to drive the 335 as a DD and put the "classic" away for the weekends. Maybe then you could fix it up a bit.

I had a mint E36 M3 as a weekend fun/garage queen car. I loved that thing. But the cost of keeping a second car was just getting to be a little silly. I sold it and my daily driver and got into a 335. I miss the M3 for sure, but I'm happy with my switch. If I could have afforded to I would have kept it, and I wish I could have, but accepting reality the move to the 335 was the best thing for me.

look the e92 m3 is a lot of wonderful things.

but its not as raw and aggressive as an e46 m3, let alone the e36 m3.

as to the op, garage the e36 and dd the 335i while you fix up the m3.

i think that would be the most rewarding thing. i say this, while currently looking at a b5 s4.

Keep the E36 ///M. A little needy and plastic inside, but they are such great cars. I still frequently drive my 98 M3 sedan even after the arrival of the my E90.

I see my '99 E36 M3 all the time, it is estoril on black and the next time I see the owner I'm testing the waters to buy it back as a track car.

Thanks everybody for the replies, it makes me feel good that others have been and/or are in the same situation as me. I don't think I'll get much for the car, I see similar cars selling on Craigslist for 4K-7K , depends on condition and history, surprisingly a lot of salvage ones, mine is clean title. Right now I can afford it, lucky me I bought extended warranty on the 335i, so I'm covered for the next 3 years on repair bills, so I have to start saving for repairs for the 335i =)


Chowbow: It's a manual coupe, lot of tasteful mods, recent clutch and transmission and lots of maintenance, but is never enough, there's always the next thing that needs maintenance. Could use some breaks soon and complete checkup and tuneup. I'll get back to you when I decide to sell it.

Here is a look at the "Purple Perpetrator" , right now the stock rims are back in, those 18"s are wrapped in Pilot Sport PS2 and the backs are bold now, I don't think I want to spend another $700 on just two tires for the back

I know what you mean. I sold my daily driven 98 M3 two years ago and recently sold my 99 M3 race car.

I miss them both dearly. The E36 M3 was my favorite of the M cars. I like the E30 M3 and the purists will say it's the only "real" M3, but I think the E36 was the best balance of performance and comfort.

I have a 335is due in next week and I'm hoping that helps me get over the separation anxiety.

Don't do it...you will miss it...and they coexist beautifully.

The 335 is a wonderful car, but the E36 M3...now that's driving at it's purest...so raw, so loud, so brutally stiff and tossable. It's like a giant go kart. I love how you feel every single grain of the road surface. Everytime I take her out, I feel like I am getting a workout.
