520d vs 325d

No...not for me, for my father. I know some of you have had 5 series before.

He doesn't care much for performance. He currently has a C Class mercedes (C220d I believe). He has had quotes and reckons that the 520d works out cheaper for his company to lease than the 325d (with an equivalent spec) and that economy-wise it helps him out also.

Opinions?

I thought that the 520d would be less nimble, bigger to manouver but at the end of the day maybe the economics win.

Why does he not go for a 320d?

Why would he do that if he can have 325d? Minbd you, that was my first question to him.... Get 320d with extra spec......

I think right now he's thinking why get a 3 at all if he can get a 5 for less money!

Maybe 320d would be cheaper than 520d.

It really comes down to the sort of car that he wants and the driving that he does.

The 520d is a surprisingly good car. Whilst it doesn't perform quite as well as a 320d because of the weight it's damned close. It'll also hammer a 520i into the ground (sorry Ruffy), though it doesn't have the wonderful straight six howl as you keep the revs up to make progess. The 5 does feel like a big car and doesn't shrink around you like the 3 does. It has masses of interior space a brilliantly comfortable ride and as Ruffy has said, the manual box is a good one too.

The 325d will obviously give better performance, but it's also going to be a sportier more involving drive.

If I were going to do mega miles, or spend hours a day in the car for work I'd go for the 5. As I don't I'd go for the more involving drive of the 3.

Get him down to a dealer for some testdrives

I had a very similar choice when I opted out of my company car scheme. I looked on the drive the deal and could get a similar price for either an M Sport 520d or 320d...

Overall though I just felt a 520d was the entry level for the 5 series and I'd rather have a 320d (as I'm under 30!) for the sportier drive. I guess for the older driver the 5 series is the car to go for, but the E90 320d is a fantastic car and much much better than the E46 I had prior...
