I have added instruction in Part 3 of the DIY on how to disable the headlight washers for the apparent majority of you who would rather not have them. This did not cause an error code. All that is required is to pull the fuse as shown below. This may have been posted elsewhere, but it may as well be here too.

Excellent! Nice work around to the fact that they don't have their own switch. Has anyone confirmed that Fuse 43 only is for those washers?

I lived 40 years in Ottawa (in the snowbelt) and I newer had headlight washers. Now I moved to Europe where is little snow and the headlight washers are standard (mandatory with xenons).

wow that is finally the answer i am looking for. how to disable headlight washers. by any chance does it throw any code, etc?

I have since upgraded my car to a 335xi, but when I did the install, the fuse came with the retrofit kit so it mustn't be used for anything else. After the install and the programming I removed the fuse to see if was easy to disable and I didn't get any codes or errors coming up.

No it's not, but the ability to either manual or auto level is required. Japanese cars for example typically don't have washers even for high-end xenon equipped models as it's neither required in Japan nor here.

from looking at the photos alone, i have a feeling this is one major surgery.

The total install was done in an evening after work. It took about 5 hours to do. The install is not overly hard, but it is time consuming. The hardest part is running the wires and making the connection in the fuse box.

I would like to disable the headlight washer on my MY08 328xi. My fuse panel is different from what you have..so I have no clue which one I should pull out.

I believe it is the top one of the two 30Amp fuses on the right side. For my 335xi, I think that removing that fuse will also kill the windshield washers. Check the little fuse block diagram in the back of your glovebox.

I thought I'd post a few extra pics of the headlight washer nozzle on it's own. One of mine started leaking (after taking out a racoon) and so I had to replace it. The only problem I encountered was getting the current one off, it clips in very solidly and with limited access to the part (the car was on the ground) it was tough the release all the clips. Since I was replacing it I ended up just breaking one of the clips and then it came off easily. I broke the clip that when it is on the car is at the bottom of the unit in the middle (see pic 2 - the clip on top in the middle).

I personally think that this is an awesome write-up even if people don't want to take it upon themselves to do this, or think that having washers for the car's headlamps is silly. Criticizing the author for his work as "a waste of time", instead of praising him his not needed. Good job to the author!

Great writeup - the one detail I was hoping to glean out of this is some detail on the headlamp washer nozzle cover. Mine seems to have gone missing yesterday - not sure if someone stole it or if it fell off.

I'm trying to see how these mount, but can't get that from the pictures here. Can you pull the washer up without damaging it? I thought I would do that to see if there's any damage to the missing side but don't really want to break anything.

If anyone has some closeup photos I would appreciate it. I presume the covers are mounted after the bumper is back on so there would be no need to remove the bumper to replace the cover (assuming my sprayer isn't damaged)? If anyone can help me out it will be appreciated.

The nozzle can be pulled up without damaging it. Once up, there are two little slots on the cover that fit over two little bumps on the nozzle. You can just pop a new one on without any damage.

I have just located this site and wish to congratulate the author on a very clearly explained article with excellent images. We have just had an unusually (for our normally wet maritime climate) cold spell here in Scotland with overnight temperatures down to minus 12 degrees centigrade in the cities and minus 22 in the highlands. This has caused many E92s to pop their headlamp wash units and my local dealer has advised me that they are now on world-wide back order.

A number of dealers have tried to raise the replacements as warranty issues but so far BMW UK have insisted that the responsibility rests with the owners to ensure that their bumpers (fenders in the US?) are frost free. The only way to prevent the problem seems to be to use a really strong wash solution in the winter. It appears that the washing fluid freezes up in the nozzzles in the cold temperatures and all it takes is the hydraulic pressure from the pump to force the nozzle and its cover to fly off whenever the windscreen washwipe is activated with headlamps on. Mine is lying somewhere on the M8 between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

For me the best news is that the headlamp wash unit can be deactivated by removing a fuse. I now intend to do this every winter. Thank you and best wishes to the author! My advice to anyone considering this upgrade though would be not to bother. These gizmos are much more trouble than they are worth.

I have completed the full headlight washer retrofit on my E90, but I am stuck on the last item.

I need to gain access to the rear of the fuse panel behind the glove box as I don't have small hands. The last item of the retrofit is to install the +12v cable to fuse location #43.

Can anyone tell me how to get the complete glove box out of the car? I have completed the following and it seems stuck, very stuck, in the middle.

- removed the glove box door
- removed all 6 screws holding the glove box upper in place
- removed the hydraulic arm push-pin to the door
- removed all 4 screws and the 2 brackets on the stainless rod

I have pull on it, very hard, and can rip it out of the car but there has to be a better way. Anyone know how???

Curious. Is this fuse box layout the same for my e90 09 328xi? yes I know I could open it up and look for myself. But this is way easier.
