what are typical problems of a 328xi

where i live we get alot of snow in the winter, not killer snow but a decent amount, so i need awd or 4wd, and my jeep needs some things fixed so i need a new car, and my friend has a bmw so she turned me onto bmw's, and i found that they only make 2 models coupe and awd, the 335xi and 328xi, the 335 is a bit pricey for me, so i want the 328xi, ive found an 09 model coupe for about 20,000, but i have some concerns, i know bmw is a more pricey car then average vehicles so the parts/labor work may be a bit more pricey, do these vehicles tend to break down or are they reliable, the model ive been looking at is auto, i cant seem to find any standard, ive read some issues with the auto tranny being jerky, is it so bad that it would be a deal break, would i notice it in a short test drive, and my dad does most of the work on my car, anywhere from changing my spark plugs to replacing a head gasket (he knows how but some vehicles its better to take it to a garage) so i wanted to know would he still be able to do typical work on this particular bmw or am i going to have to take it to a shop everytime, also how are these models in the snow, sorry thats so long, thanks

you have the N52 motor...Very strong and reliable!! ...i was kinda in the same boat as you, we dont get a lot of snow here, but im not allowed to call out of work, and the 335xi was a little expensive for me...so i got the 328xi coupe...i have read all you really need is some good winter tires, and you will do just fine!

They come in sedans and coupes and wagons and convertibles (only rwd), both in rwd or awd. If you are worried about reliability the 328 is the way to go but the 335i is much more tuneable. the 328 auto tranny is from GM, and the 335i auto/man and 328 manual transmissions are either Getrag or Zeg...(someone help me out here).

Maintenance on these are a little excessive. Brake fluid every 2 years? My father only did it once in his 40 years, and that was on his 67 Impala when he was restoring it. Spark plugs are the same like on any other car. Oil is the same except you have to change the oil filter differently than on other cars.

There is nothing wrong choosing an xi (or x-drive, which is the samething) for the snow. Put Bridgestone Blizzaks on and you'll be fine.

I can't believe there were no periods in your entire post. That was the longest run on sentence I've ever seen.

On another note the only issue with the E92 328xi is that it's too awesome. Lol. Sorry, but I just love mine. Now with the PBX I'm very happy.

Look into the "ticking" issue on one of the stickies. It's no big deal though. I had it and just changed the lifters.

Changing your brake fluid every 2 years doesn't have anything to do with the make of the car. Brake fluid of any kind, in any vehicle, absorbs water over time and therefore looses it's properties.

You'll be fine with the 328, they are very reliable cars. However BMW's don't take neglect like a Japansese car might. If you don't maintain it, they will bite you hard.

Look up the "old school maintenance" schedule and perform it. BMW's free maintenance schedule is a joke. Switch to oil changes every 12 months/7,500m, & tranny and diff fluid every 2 yrs/30k. You may also consider the "transfer case" fluid if you do buy an x-drive. Perform some preventative maintenance and the car will run forever.

It's the same system, they renamed it for the 09 3er and other years for different bmws. Its for the bmw illiterate that is confused by the Xs, the Ms, the Cs, the Cics, the is's, the iS's, etc.

328 is very reliable. Mine's been going strong now for 4 years. As long as you take care of it (regular oil changes, flushes, don't drop a supercharger in it) you should be fine. Minor issues like nicks, scrapes, peeling etc are all normal wear and tear.

328 is one of the most reliable car around, as far as mechanical wise, there really isn't much issues, can only think of a couple thing, mechatronic seal in the tranny ($5 piece of rubber, + whatever labor cost is), some AC do have leaks in the system. but both issues applies to both 335 and 328. I can't recall any other concerns.

buying used

So i cant go wrong with buying a used. It says low miles (its from a private owner), so ill assume 20k if that, should i get from a dealer rather then a private owner?

You still want to get warranty. An 09 will have the 4year/50,000 mile so that's pretty good, but if you got it CPO from a dealer you'll be covered until 2015 because CPO tags on 2 years to the 4/50.

20k for an 09 low miles is very good. It wouldnt be that cheap CPO though. I paid $29,900 for a CPO 08 with 34k miles.

ye dealers want like $25,000 +, depending if its a coupe or not, the owner has a coupe and wants it for $20,000

all its got is the cold weather package, he has it listed for 23,000, but i think he'd take 20,000 cash, how much does a 09 328 coupe typically go for?

$20k is a really really low price for an 09 328i xdrive coupe with low miles. From a dealer, you'd pay $30k+ for that car. Be careful with Craigslist.

I would stay away from the 07. No warranty left (unless it's CPO'd, but it doesn't say) and the price is too high. Why would you want an 07 with more miles and no warranty for more money?
