Rattling noise, left rear only when cold - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

Now that winter is approaching the outside temperatures are dropping to the 40s here in New Jersey. When my 2007 328xi is cold, with every bump I go over I hear a rattling sound coming from the left rearwell area. Kinda sounds like some big marbles in a jar. As the day warms up the sound gets quieter and eventually goes away only to come back the next morning.

There's nothing in the trunk that's making this sound.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Sounds like a bad rear shock mount. How many miles on your car? I think I replaced mine at 120k miles but they were way beyond done.

The car only has 165,000 miles.

Someone said this could be the wheel bearings too. Are both of these jobs DIY?

did you do a golf tee mod yet? stock exhaust? its possibly the left muffler exhaust flap getting play in it and rattling, block off the vacuum line and take it for a drive and see if the noise is still present

My left rear brakes rattle over bumps.

To find out if that's what it is with yours, put the window down, go over some bumps, with your left foot on the brakes. If the rattle goes away you found the problem.

What's the golf tee mod?

Stock exhaust, basically I just drive it around, no mods whatsoever...
