Canadians Buying Tires-Local or Tire Rack?

Where is everyone buying their winter tire/rim/tpms packages from?

Local or Tirerack?

Being trying to do some comparisions and the prices in same cases look similar, but what are the quality of the rims if I purchase them in Canada?

Tirerack vs the Dealer? Hands down the Tirerack. Picked up two sets plus a spare for about the same price as one set from the Dealer.

Stealership? For wheels? Seriously? That is asking to be ripped off. Dealer quoted me over $4k to replace my tires - same tires were under $1,800 from Tirerack including tax, customs and shipping.

If you need wheels and tires, and you are looking at better quality tires, NOBODY can beat tirerack. They will ship them by UPS to your door in about a week - balanced, mounted, ready to be put on the car. Do it yourself in 45 minutes or pay any garage $40 to do it. Not sure if your car actually has TPMS sensors - my 2008 335i uses "indirect TPMS" - uses the ABS sensor to determine if a wheel is spinning faster, thus deflating. No need for TPMS.

If you only need tires, you should be able to find a local tire dealer what be close or even beat the tirerack prices - after shipping, customs and $25 a corner for mounting is factored in. Costco has the best prices, but is first come first serve everyday. And staff is better than the stoners working at my local tire dealer.

i got mine at discountiredirect.com. better prices than tirerack, they also give a warranty for about 100 bucks more, and they do the same where they're price includes shipping duties and all that junk, comes in about a week or less depending on which warehouse they ship from

I hate to say it, but I rarely buy local for anything these days.

Everything south of the border offers better value, even after including shipping & brokerage.

I'm all for supporting local business, but only if they are competitive.

Having shopped Tirerack, Discount Tire, 1010Tires, Costco, and three other local places in Calgary, the best price I was able to find, believe it or not for my Michelin X-Ice (CRV) was at Canadian Tire of all places. I was pleasantly surprised myself!

It all depends if you want to pay the premium for the OEM wheels. At the dealer, the cost would be approx $400 per wheel, plus the cost of a runflat tire. This would make the total package approx $3000 for a set.

I would recommend searching the forums for people selling wheels, and then source winter tires from any of the sponsors or companies listed above.

I'm in California right now.

I was out of Canada for a week and as such, can import $750 of items without paying any HST on that amount.

So I ordered a set of Conti DWS tires from Tirerack that's total of USD 542 including shipping.

1010tires wanted $900 or so.
Premier tires in Brampton was $870-something.

So my Tirerack purchase will run me $700 with install and balancing fees and the gas to drive down and back to Buffalo.

So I save over $170 by buying from Tirerack and getting the tires installed in the US.

As some mentioned above, you may be able to find the odd good price in Canada. My experience has been that TireRack generally has very competative pricing and a great selection, even shipping to Canada.

+1

Cross shopping now...tires seem to even out when you factor in shipping, duties etc.

Once you start shopping Rims and TPMS it's a whole different ball game.

Best Price from Tire Rack for 17" and Sport Edition Rims + TPMS + Shipping/Etc is 1700 bucks.

If locally I get can get close to that I'll go local.

i've used tirerack before, but simply tire came close enough in pricing (with installation) that i went with them.

plus, the dollar is lower than it was, making the US price more expensive.

TireRack FTW.

In the last couple of years I've already purchased 6 sets of tires and 4 sets of rims from them :|

I ended up buying local (joycity tires) last year as the package price (winter RFTs + wheels) was very close to the Tirerack prices.

TireRack, why pay outrageous prices locally when you can have the set shipped to your house for less?

if possible ship to your closest cross border post office. Maybe not applicable to the OP, but for those in Vancouver, it is easily the cheapest option to use Tirerack and ship within the US.

That's right. Everything (shipping, duty, tax) paid up front. Did it a few months ago. Works well and they arrive at your front door.

I went Tire Rack when I bought my car. I had them ship to the dealership and the dealership put them on for me (I wanted my winters on the OEM rims and my summers on the 193M's).
