Wrong attitude buddy, Its not as cut and dry as that. I wouldn't necessarily call driving 10mph over the speed limit driving unsafe and thus warrant a citation . You have to know all of the conditions first to prove that it was unsafe to be driving at that speed.

He clocked you with a "hands free radar" while going in the opposite direction, how would the cop even aim such a thing? And wouldn't the speed that he was moving also affect the radar reading? Sounds fishy.

Of course the cop's speed absolutely affects the measurement. He was measuring the difference in speed between his car and the OP's. So, he got the reading, subtracted his supposed speed from that reading, and got 35MPG.

Unless the cop actually had his radar hardwired to the ECU to auto-subtract his speed, which I highly doubt as this will also depend on the relative angle between the direction of his motion and yours, this was a very weak reading. That is probably why he only went for 10 over instead of 15 or 20. I would guess that the OP was going faster than just 10 over, as 10 over never seems to attract attentions from cops. I would also guess that cops tend to decide how much over based on the uncertainty of their reading and how much they don't hate you.

Back when I was in PA, I always fought my ticket, and the result was always the same: they didn't reduce the fine, but they did remove the points and left my record clean. This was very important to me as it allowed me to keep my safe driver status with my insurance, which can be a lot more costly than a ticket once you lose it. I've been told however that in CA fighting a ticket usually doesn't work. So is Iowa more like CA, or PA?

1. What is a "hands-free radar gun"?

2. Do you have a radar detector?

Most likely a built in front & rear transmitter/receiver package. The cop does not to do any math the system will figure it out regardless of him being stopped, closing or pulling away. Last two times I was stopped it was by a cop going the other way & I know they had my speed dead on. One catch & release & one ticket.

Interesting note I was more over the speed limit in my pickup truck & got let go. BMW was +11 & I got the ticket.

I expect the system also has an alarm he can set to what target speed will trip an alert. About the only way he canít get you is if you are going straight across his path like at an intersection.

Bottom line is he was over the limit so he should just suck it up & pay the fine. If itís a points deal a plea bargain can generally kill the points by getting the speed over reduced (donít ask me how I know)

Its just the cost of doing business in a quick car.

I always get the ticket! (I'm a blonde, BTW. DWW?)

If the LEO has his radar set on the "comic book alarm" it's transmitting and should light up your radar detector within a wide radius. I think that's why they do it -- to slow the fast guys down.

Anyway, to the OP -- 1.) hire a lawyer 2.) buy a radar detector.

How was he a prick & rude if he didn't ask you anything?

Did you expect him to give you a handshake for speeding? Maybe wash your windows? Say please and thank you? Ask where you're going? Ask if you were having a nice day up until this point?

He's an officer, his job is public safety. He's not getting paid for customer service, or making people happy. He's getting paid to uphold the law, and keep people safe. Every time he goes up to the car he could be coming up on someone with a weapon, or someone with warrants with nothing to lose.

Show some

He may save your life one day. Or just write you another ticket.

Step 1: Smile and Listen to PO

Step 2: ADMIT NOTHING

Step 3: Hand over requested documents

Step 4: Receive ticket and snide remark from PO

Step 5: Pay ticket or Fight ticket

Any questions?

I wish I could get out of tickets. My mom gets pulled over all the time. Not one ticket ever! Driving my car back from Texas I was pulled over 80 in a 65. The cop without hesitation pulls me out of the car and writes me a ticket. I sure he saw me as a 22 year old with a 335i yeah this kid is getting a ticket. Oh well just paid it last week cost me 240 something because I paid it via phone.

You can get pulled over if you speed? That's weird.
