Looking at Turkeyplucker's pics above, I'd say there is definite room for improvement.

I'm not aware of any "kit" being available (from Turner, VAC, etc.).

Could you fabricate something?

Is there a DIY guide by any chance?

I've seen quite a few leaky oil pans while doing DP installs. Seems to happen to any car over 50k miles but I haven't seen one that requires immediate attention. Thanks for the heads up!

How to "cradle" the engine?

All - I'm not sure what's involved with dropping the subframe. Can it be done without a lift? How does one "cradle" the engine? Can someone lay out the steps for dropping the subframe?

There is a DIY for changing the gasket without dropping the subframe, but I don't trust being able to do it without getting bits in the oil pan and not being able to fish them out.

We put the vehicle on a lift and checked it with a flash light. After 50K miles, it will definitely be leaking, along with the transmission pan gasket (auto) + mechatronics sealing sleeve.
My sleave is leaking now im at 76k :/

Not to revive this old thread, but 45 min is unrealistic. More like 2 hours, add 1 hour if it is all wheel drive. I just finished this on my x3 and it's a big pain in the a$$. Engine bar is a must to support the motor. Subframe had to be completely dropped. I managed leaving the steering rack in place, supported it with bonji straps. Bonjis give you ability to move it around when getting to pan bolts, then getting the pan out required a little wiggling. All in all, this project took me 4 days working part time. Replace water pump and thermo while the subframe is down.

What are the symptoms when the sleave is leaking? can you only check by visual or do you know by something happening as you drive as well?

My oil pan gasket is not leaking just yet, but my VCG drips from top to bottom of engine block and leaks to down to garage floor. I was planning wash my engine and to remove plastic cover from bottom and clean all the accumulated oil and see how long it takes to leak again for now till I decide to change VCG. Good info thanks!

I would get it fixed ASAP. Leaky oil may lead to other gasket issues, such as oil pan and oil filter housing, and thats $$$ if not doing yourself..

VCG is easy comparing to all other gaskets.. 2-3 hours on an N52. All other gaskets on these engines are significant efforts.. If you want, PM and I ll either scan or take pictures from the Bentley manual..

Thanks dude I appreciate it. Ill PM you.

I have a friend who is a BMW tech who has done work for me in the past. I am planning to ask him to do VCG job and water pump whenever it fails. Thats my plan! ..

Reviving old thread but I got quoted 10hrs from an Indy they found the leak when installing my DP's go figure lol. Still trying to find a better place to do it. They said its been leaking for 4-5 months now... Yet i brought it to BMW in December and they didn't see anything. I did have to top up the oil twice now since i got the car in September...
