Oil change at 14,000!?

I got a brand new 328i and the diagnostic thing says the oil needs to be changed at 14,000 miles but that seems crazy... I drive the sh1t out of that car... 14,000 seems not right, especially after the break-in period... traditionally the oil should be changed after the break-in cycle is done... shouldn't it?

I hope my car doesn't break

This normal for the BMW free maintenance.

If you plan on keeping the car for a long time then you should change at 1200mi break-in and then every 5000-7500mi thereafter. DIY or pay the dealer to do it. If the dealer does it make sure they don't reset the maintenance counter or you may might never get your "free" oil changes every 14k.

If you go this route then you might want to change other fluids as well at half their normal intervals or better (even those now considered lifetime fill by BMW). Brake fluid every year. Coolant every 2 years, plugs every 60,000 miles, air filter every 30,000mi, MT fuild every 30,000mi, differential every 30k (although this is tough now since there is no drain plug), PS fluid every 30k and fuel filter every 60k.

This topic is discussed extensively so you might want to for more opinions.

An interim out-of-pocket oil change is always a good idea (5-7.5k). Its about $90-$130 at dealerships, cheaper if you DIY of course. It won't void warranty, just make sure you're using the right oil and filter if you're not doing it at the dealership.

I changed my own oil at 15000kms.... car feels better. Not much involved mate, just 5litres of BMW oil, (i bought difrect from Castrol rather than the dealer as its heaps cheaper for the same stuff), BMW oil filter $20Aus, and oil tray or bucket. Only thing you have to worry is dumping the oil... i have a mechanic mate who has a drum for that sort of stuff. took 10mins to do.

ANd it doesnt void any warranty... just that your computer doesnt register you did a change as BMW have to reset the clock. But i have another 10,000kms to go before my car advises me to get a change. So i was premature in that aspect but i feel better having a cleaner engine!

Actually 14K sounds right because that's the lowest one that I've seen so far. Most people's countdown shows between 16 and 18K for an oil change.

For those in the US, keep in mind our engines require 6.5 liters (or 7 quarts) of oil. I don't want anyone to come up a quart or two short.

I changed my oil at 4000 miles. I currently have 9000 miles on the car and the computer is saying my first free oil change isn't for another 11000 miles.

I have an E90 and just took it in for the first service maintenance at 15,000. However, at about 11,000 I was getting a low oil indicator. Took the car to the dealer, they added a quart of oil, and told me to return at 15,000 for the regular scheduled maintenance.

I changed every 3500 miles with synthetic on my G35 , even though the recommended is 7500. I dont see how oil can last 14000 miles, even in a BMW
