Lot of fun for the money.
Have you driven both R171 and R172 SLKs?

Was the new R172 an auto or manual, 200 250 or 350? Can you post some thoughts?

I had one of the original R170 SLK320s years ago and it was pretty pants dynamically, but was not bad at the time. Black with AMGs and Sienna Biege/Eucalyptus wood SL steering wheel. The V6 sounded good, but I remember the kompressors sounded a bit naff. I hope the new 4-pot SLK200 sounds reasonable.

Go for it James. I have contacted my local MB dealer to see if they can match the lease deals, no answer as of yet.

Are you going for the SLK200 Blue Eff AMG Sport Edition 125 Auto, with metallic, airscarf and htd seats? My prefered colour would be Obsidian Black with the Bengal Red Leather.

Ditto on Obsidian, my favourite. No obsidian left apparently.

You have mail. Thanks for the heads up!

No, thats a designo accessory - you need to get your dealer to fit that - truck department obviously.....

I'm thinking of getting some side scripts that say "Mann Zug" down the side. What do you reckon?

Sorry to disappoint you but have a look at the Whatcar? review. They say:

the entry-level one is disappointing. It doesn’t have the pace of similarly-priced rivals, and there’s so little grunt at the top of the rev range that you might as well short-shift.

and

Sure enough, wind- and road noise are really well contained. The smaller petrol engines ruin things, though, because they sound harsh when you rev them.

I sat in one today in the dealership and they are certainly great for the price though. I'm tempted too.

Shame, as it shouldnt be hard to make a 4 pot sound good - I've heard plenty of motorsport 4 cylinder exhausts that sound good.

Lack of grunt is a given, I'm hoping the amg kit makes it handle ok - in the same way a mini one handles well, but with no grunt. We'll see....

I'm treating this more as an extended hire car - £10 a day!

My missus owned an R170 230 Komp, which as you say was poor dynamically, but a lot of fun for £7k

She was looking to replace it a while ago, so we test drove the R171 200K which was light years ahead of the R170 in just about every respect.

The R172 was the SLK 200 Blue efficiency with a manual tranny, which was lacking in the poise of the previous model TBH. And reminded me that MB don't do well at manual gearboxes.

Personally I prefer the front end of the R171 over the present model and R171's can be picked up very cheaply, although some of the bigger engines are dirty and have a £435 RFL attached

I have to ask, why such good merc deals right now?

Next question, will these kinda deals or better still be around next summer? If not then I should seriously think about something now.

Turns out I couldn't resolve my paperwork complexities on my order, so there is a nice palladium silver SLK200 AMG auto with black leather, panoramic roof, heated seats, airscarf, mirrors and parctronic up for grabs. It might be the last one left on this deal, not sure.

...they are selling out....I suspect this might have been pre made stock to cope with demand of the new model - perhaps the recession has had a harder impact than they expected on that demand.

I'm back looking at CLK55 cabrios, and a late entry on the list is the Mk1 supercharged Mini cooper S cabrio - seriously good value now in the UK. Thirsty but very tempting.
