New Audi S5

http://www.audi.co.uk/new-cars/a5/s5-coupe.html

What do you think?

One of the cheapest luxury cars on the market that can do 60 in less than 5 secs according to manufacturer official figures!

I really like it, and love the new engine. Easily tunable to well past 400bhp....

I like them. They have improved the efficiency of the engine as the CO2 was 225ish up until recently. 190 CO2 for 333bhp is pretty impressive.

I drove the present model and found it more of a GT car. It lack the dynamics of an M3The auto box was smooth but a bit lethargic.

Pretty sure the S-tronic shifts in 0.5 seconds when in manual mode. I wouldn't drive it in D mode although you can get the boxes remapped easily enough.

You can also pick up a 2009/2010 model s4 manual for around 25k right now. Might be the better buy considering they don't do this new s5 in manual. No matter how fast an auto can shift or how cool it is with all its settings and launch control etc, nothing beats the control and power you feel rowing through them yourself.

Silly move by Audi to not give manual as an option. Are there really that few of us left that still prefer manuals?

It seems you are in the minority. Modern autos, especially dual clutch systems are far removed from the lazy autos found in old Mercs and Volvos.
Manual gearboxes will go the way of column mounted shifters and starting handles

I was converted to auto and have converted a few others since who swore they would never buy an auto

Ive driven the S4 and it was quick but felt a little blunt once up and rolling.

Felt numb to drive.

True I can understand that and 90% of the time I had my 335i auto it was perfect, it's just those few times when I really missed going through the gears myself and the feeling of getting it perfect.

It's difficult now though as hardly any high end fast cars come with manual option so I guess your right and I'l just have to learn to love it. I'm the playstation generation so it shouldn't be hard right?

I think that depends on how good the clutch is, of all the Audi's and VW's I've owned, only the MK5 GTi had a nice manual box and clutch set-up. All the others Porsche included were pretty poor IMO.

Always liked the S4/5. Heard a couple of the new V6's though...they seem very muted.

that really surprises me, thought Porsche had a very good reputation for their manual set up?

Ive never had the pleasure myself but going from reviews etc....

I think the pleasure I get from manual downshifts, the challenge of learning the car with rev matching etc.
Now dont get me wrong if I had more than one car, I could live with an auto or dual clutch for commuting but for a performance car, it just seems part of the fun for me.

I had a demo GTI '08 plate for a few days and that had fantastic set up. But the BMW snatchy clutch to shame

To go back on topic, if I bought an S5 or similar car, I think I would rather a manual. Plus living in london, how the hell can you parallel park a semi auto
