Wine

Since we had/have the Watch thread I thought I'd ask if anyone has had any good wine lately that they would recommend. Now I appraciate there there are more than a few members who are under the drinking age (what ever happened to young brendan who was gonna hook me up with his sister/milf) but there's gotta be a few folk of drinking age here somewhere that have had a decend drop they can recommend.

From a recent trip to the hunter I can highly recommend the brokenwood 06 ILR Semillon, 06 Wade block, 09 mistress and of course the graveyard.

I strongly recommend a pinot noir i drink when i'm in sirloin eating mood. It's called 10 minutes by tractor (2009). Has to be purchased via phone or online, office located in Melbourne. Think it's going at $50 a bottle.

If you are referring to the Gelong vinyard, 1st choice they have it.

Pock I quite like the broken wood stuff, one of my fav reds is a blend of theirs, I think it's a Shiraz cab merlot...

But I really prefer white and am currently loving gruner veltliner, although finding it in bottleos is proving a bit tricky

I will usually also have a nice dry white in the fridge such as a shaw and smith sauvignon blanc or cape mentelle sem sauv blanc

Hmm

I'm more of a wine gourmand than a gourmet

Whites
I don't particularly like dry wine... so any white has to be either quite floral or sweet
I find the gewurtztraminers the most interesting here... josmeyer grand cru when I'm feeling in the mood to splurge... dopff grand cru sporen when I'm being more frugal

I'm a sucker for the sweet reislings as well.. once again german/ alsace houses (once again dopff, hugel has some nice cheap ones as well)

Red
I'll drink anything. lol.

My tastes in reds are especially vulgar. Shiraz, Pinot Noir... I don't have any particular favourites with houses or years.. i tend to just pickup anything in the $30-50 range

I think my favourite wine of all would be moscato lol

I have had the pleasure of drinking reds from $3.00 to $150.00 and to be totally honest If you poured me a glass I couldn't tell you what it cost. I could however tell you if I liked it. The best or at least the most memorable was a Raven wine. Can't remember what it was called or where it came from. I purchased six bottles from a boutique winery that was displaying its wares at Chadstone shopping centre on a Sunday. By Thursday that week all six were gone. It went down a real treat.

Speaking of 2 Minutes by Tractor, I would recommend Yarra Yearing Dry Red No2. Came across it last year over a sydney to yarra/mornington drive. Beautiful big red. Their Chardonnay is just as good.

Also like the St Hugo line.

But for a casual dinner, something random in the $20-30 range from the bottleshop.

A few recommendations and also to support some fantastic young wine makers ill put these ones as my favs.

William Downie - Mornington Peninsula (Pinot Noir) 2009
2009 top year. 2010 are still quite young but will mature to a lovely wine.

Alex Head-Head 'Brunette' (Shiraz) 2010
Fresh face / young lad form S.A top wine.

Mac Forbes - Woori Yallock (Pinot Noir)2008
2008 was my fav year. His Yarra Glen & Yarra Valley are quite nice too.

Onannon - Pinot Noir 2010 - (Limmited to 200 Cases)
Just ordered 2 cases yesterday $30 a bottle fantastic wine presented with a wax covered cork.

Bella Copia - First Drop (Arnies) 2008
For the white lovers something to try that we dont see alot of. Also a Pommy making wine in Aus. S.

Chaps in the old days I was a member of 'The Wine Society', then the great and wonderful GFC hit and there were a number of high profile 'wine' investment schemes that went bust, lets call this the great flood (GF). During this time I didn't visit the good ole folk at TWS as well lets be honest there was only soo much room in the cellar and when the wife had to climb over the wine boxes to get into bed she mentioned I should stop buying any more wine. well apart from a little expansion program to fit more into the cellar there came a point that I had to stop.

Well its been a few years since the GF and there is room in the cellar again, so I thought I'd pop into TWS and see what was on offer. I have always been a big fan or their own label wines for the price and I can say that for the money <20 pb that their 08 directors selection and Tas Pinot are very much worth the money and the good news is there is a shop at castle cove (right on the way home whao!!!) so you no longer need to be a member to buy. Should you be so inclined to buy less than a 6pack you will pay more but at the same time if you spend more than 500 (I think) you get free membership.

BTW hello if there are any fellow members out there!

Good solid performer that one, year in and year out, cellars very well, I had an 01 and 02 a couple of weeks ago and it has aged very nicely indeed, probably got another 5-10 in the bottle :-)

Hard to get but on the Pinot Noir side, also Hunter, Calais Estate Hannah's Run.

Also from CE is their reserve Cab Sauv which is amazing. Recently did a test bottle from my case of 05 and it was stunning.

2002 Lakes Folly Cab, excellent, still age left.

Other than that, the rest I have is all ageing and not testable. Ie, 77 Grange

I think you might want to hurry on the 77, should be at its peak already. Any reason that year?

It's being recorked at the next clinic. It's holding well, still above shoulder, just.

No reason except it was a good vintage!

Also have an 86 Hill of Grace and an 88 Lindemans Limestone Coast.

when is the next clinic? I had a check of my wine companion and Jeremy seems to thing you should be drinking that 77 if you haven't already done so. I got a couple of Riedel O series glasses ready when you are
