inner rear tyre wear (again)

after having 2 sets of bridgestones wear very prematurely on the rear i fitted a set of continental 3 non runflat these are wearing evenly over the surface of the tyre which leads me to the conclusion as i have always suspected its nothing to do with the rear camber and that its either the bridgestones that are rubbish or is it a combo of bridgestones and runflats either way the contis are far better

the current set of bridgestone i have, are wearing quite evenly actually...but i check the pressure every 3-4 days...

iv had standard bridgestones on my car for nearly 2 years now.. they are only just starting to look like they might need replacing

just keep on top of the pressures and all will be well

It's a combination of the negative camber and low speed hard acceleration which accentuates The camber which causes the wear.

certainly not hard acceleration in my case!! the newer bridgestones are supposed to be different to the earlier ones (still wont buy them again) and i check tyre pressures weekly and i now have a tyrepal monitor which is very useful with non runflats

What pressures are your running, same as on the door plaque?

no after the first set which lasted 20,000 just the rears wore out the n i increased the pressures on the rear by 2lbs the next set lasted 19,000 and all four went on the outsides i reckon the rest of the tyre had another 6-8000 miles left i had a bmw kds done after the first set which showed all the settings within limits interestingly i had bmw performance suspension fitted and a kds 10,000 miles ago when i fitted the continentals and they have worn evenly just a thought i wonder if the (far superior) suspension has something to do with it there is certainly far better damper control and ride characteristics over the m sport system

All four of my RE050's were stripped out on the inner edge after 10k, front and rear.

Fucking ridiculous when its 280/340 per tyre.

Every 3-4 DAYS?? Are you serious?

I check mine about once a month and even then its rare they actually need any pressure adjustment.

I think the more expensive the tyre the more often you need to check tyre pressures in addition if I was getting the type of wear as described on this thread I'd consider checking wheel alignment more often.

kds done twice at 280 a pop all settings spot on so its not that thats the problem

Running accurate pressures is essential, but a problem with this issue, different tyres will wear evenly on the same alignment settings, and pressues can be run the same.

Carlos has commented on camber and hard acceleration, being a big part of the issue. This has been true for many years, even pre RFT, on the BMW sport setups.

What makes it worse, RFTs and negative camber can never be friends, complete conflicts when we think of the dynamics involved, add the squat from hard acceleration, (where we add more negative camber and toe in) and we have another enemy of the combination.

My tyres were completely knackered at the rear to the point that there was wire sticking out of the inner edges & I dont drive "that" hard...

Without trying to get a reaction then surely DXB would have experienced split inner walls & more so than anyone else due to his own admission of getting 18mpg & driving hard.

I believe DXB was replacing his tyres before they got to the wire.

BTW, you don't have to drive hard to get inner wear, you can just make it more rapid. A lot of stop-start driving can also be an accelerator for the inner wear. As can a lot of 'push on' driving in the twisty bits. The camber settings are not going to help, however we drive.

very serious...

if i'm lazy during the week, then its at the minimum every sunday!...

I got a michelin pump in my boot...

altho i don't suffer from any pressure lost, i'd rather be safe than sorry...

i don't think you'd be especially sorry by not noticing a drop in pressure within a fortnight..

i do mine one every 2 weeks, and i thought i was anal about it :s

My rears were screwed and replaced them with the supposedly updated rft and they wearing evenly now.

My fronts have inner edge wear, shows it's just a badly designed tyre.

As pete said, I was Changing rears constantly (every 3k). They were low but never metal showing. I checked them too regularly.

I never once let them get that low.

I agree entirely with this.
I was very careful with pressures on the rft but pretty much to no avail, horrific inner edge wear.
Nothing has changed but the tyre to Contis and all is well. On my second set now and wear is even.
Conclusion can only be that the rfts were the problem.

Just look at some of the X5 examples, with wider tyres and sport suspension, knocks off the inner edge in no time. Wider the tyres, the worse the impact, running on agressive camber settings. Simply put, RFTs have very limited function, IMO, as they compromise what tyres and suspension systems are supposed to do, and how they interact.
