unfortunatly I dont have the blacklines but have the facelift rear ones which need to go in at the same time as the front... Will post some pics when they are in...

The exhaust on the SI has the same center section as the standard 320i and I think also the back box is the same but the header is different so you wont get any sound change.... for better sound go for a custom stainless steel exhaust by one of the reputable companies and they can actually tune the sound to your liking!!!

The Liner replacement is underway !!! the guy from the engineering company just called me and he expects to have the block back to me quite soon... cannot wait ))))

AFAIK the rear silencer, front down pipe and cat is totally unique to the 320si.
The centre section will probably be unique too.

The rear silencer has a very short pipe exit. When it was run on the rolling road they couldn't use the standard exaust sensor they had to use a motorsport sensor - was told it was unusual for a BMW standard exhaust.

Agree that you should go for a custom stainless steel -it might be a bit tiring for autobahn driving though. The car creates one hell of a noise at 100mph+.
You need to hear it singing at that speed.

Just to put a visual interpretation of this:



And basically from this, all the way to the rear is the same with most 320i and the rest.

This manifold basically gives way better engine breathing.

Hmm this is odd when I took it on rolling road with others on here. They had no probs to get the sensor in the tail pipe on the 2.0 cars except mine.
The exit pipe is defo different so it can't be the same.

The manifold is exclusive to the Si, but the rest is stock N46B20 from the 320i. The Si does create much more of a burble than a normal 320i.

And the si also makes a ticking noise when the whole exhaust system is cooling down, something that the 320i doesn't. This ticking noise really reminds me of an M5 a friend has.

I agree, like you said earlier, the rear silencer has a very short pipe exit and itīs oval. Pipe lenght is only about 160 mm (millimeters) thatīs around 7 inches.

I was thinking about adding only twin tail pipe to my car. But, because the pipe is so darn short, i havent found the correct one to buy yet. Twin tail pipes lenght seems to be something between 240 mm and 260 mm. I also want one without the need to weld, because there are pipe tips that will have to be mounted by pushing it over the original tail-pipe (just like 320Si have right now).

Adding two tail pipes instead of one canīt be this hard can it?

Engine Block Modifications :))

As Promised guys... here are some pics showing the changes made to the engine liners which have been replaced with special iron ones and the pistons upgraded...
We opted to make the liners thicker to withstand prolonged use and used higher spec continous piston rings and ligher pistons.
The pictures speak for themself .. you can see the increased thickness of the new liner compared to the old one and we decided to engineer and over lap between cylinders to make sure the liners are supporting each other which strengthens the engine structure...
The picture are before skimming the block or honning the cyliners so never mind the levels they will be all be spot on when it is finished.
The key thing we had to do is to rebuild it to BMW manufacturing spec as far as measurements is concerned and we achieved that spot on as well... All spec from BMW TIS system.
The Head is not receiving much focus as theere was nothing wrong with it anyways but it has been fully cleaned and rebuilt.. will post some more pics of it...
Expect it to be running in 2 weeks time :-))

Absolutely, they are about double the thickness with an overlap in between to add strength to the block...
The engine is now fully rebuilt and waiting to go in the car this week....

Will post some pics of the rebuild....

This engine is very unique and took alot of time and patience to built.. i would say that it is not possible to complete such a job without having the Technical details from BMW which we used heavily for the machining work and the assembly, torquing, etc...

The timing is also tricky as you have to time the head and balancer shafts at the bottom of the engine as well ....

I will post pics shortly and a video of it running when it is all done..

Another thing worth noting is that the bottom end balance shafts were out of tune when we took them off which indicates that they have not been put on correctly!!! so much for BMW service!!

Amazing work mate!

I think that if something happens to my 320si I'll send it over to you and then drive all the way back to run it in.

Talking about it...this engine now needs to be broken into, correct?

Never dyno'd my car...wonder what's the real hp/torque on my car.

Changing the cylinder liners with thicker ones, would that have a negative affect on power?

Great when someone appreciates the workmanship that has gone into this

The engine will need a break in period and an oil and filter change after the first 500 miles then after 1500 to make sure any minor debris are washed off then the normal 1500 break in change...

I will see how much come out but I am expecting some gains so fingers crossed :-))

The thicker liners wont affect the power either way as the piston rings dont actually drag significantly on them in operation as the oil is in between, the key thing is that the liners and the piston rings match and are made of compatible materials... the new liners will add to the strength and longevity of the engine (especially with the overlap) so it will now last for a loooooooooong time..

Gasket permitting we can turbo charge the engine and do all sorts with this liner piston combination to significantly increase thee horsepower but this is not what I am aiming for with this build...

After the machineing work, I am expecting an minor increase in the compression ratio which will add to the power a little but not sure how much... we will see when we dyno it )

After completing the testing, I will be able to offer this repair package to all 320si owners... I am sure we have some stuck people out there !!!

Thats a superb rebuild. Fantastic effort, and congratulations on figuring the VANOS and balance shafts out, cos that takes some skill.

Its great to see work like this done, all i ever do is take an engine out, and put a replacement in.

The timing is an absolute pain but with the BMW special tools and technical details all is possible.... I was actually worried about the gasket thickness needed after the machining but we took off very little that it was not a problem and BMW were quite good in that you can vary the relation between the crank and the timing sprocket to be able to get it spot on... took a while but we now know what needs to be done...

Fingers crosses it starts with no problems... aiming to get it in tomorrow ... wish me luck guys !!!
