Yeah Thas what he said after I gave him the sib/tsb! 1200$$ Check this out. I was coming to work n heard screeching sound like the belts. I looked at the engine n the ac compressor pully cap snapped off n the belt is really loose! Looks like I'm stuck n need a tow. Anyone know about the ac compressor pully issues breaking off?

1200 is cheaper than what i have been quoted... i know for sure BMW dealers quote this near 3k if youre paying out of pocket. and 2 day labor is really a short time for this since it takes 3 - 4 days at BMW. mine took 6 days for the whole thing and had to wait 2 extra days for head unit replacement. well i have been hearing my ticking noises coming back here and then now.... but i have been topping off the engine oil when i hear the noise and it goes away.

i am taking my car in tomorrow for a maintenance and see what they will say about it and post it up here.

just got my car back this morning... and i have told them about the ticking noise and how it was already attempted with lifter replacement before but went ahead and asked them to see if they can do a check up on the issue again along with the scheduled maintenance.

well then i got the car back today they told me that i wasnt too low on oil but the level was some what low and they went ahead and changed out the oil for the maintenance and topped it off more than usual.

the ticking noise was constant before lifter replacement few months back but lately it was coming back as a off and on thing. i have started the car 5 times at a cold start and havent had any sign of the noise.

i used to also get this shake or shutter now and then in the morning or at a stop light on a cold day but that seemed to have not appeared either as of yet.

i have also went back to stock air filter unit from K&N and i have to say... the engine seems to have alot more refined idle.

ill check it out more for a week and see what happens.

Nice but make sure to go back immediately if the tick comes back. They will eventually change out the head. I had idling issues as well and it turned out to be a fuel pressure regulator. It fixed it up and improved throttle response plus they updated software.

Noticed this thread hasn't been posted in in about a month, well i have a question or two.
About 2 months ago, i noticed the lifters starting to tick in my 2007 328i, i went into the dealership, and they replaced the lifters no questions asked.
I then noticed they started to tick again, shortly after, the lifters being replaced.
I took a video of the noise, took my car to the dealership, and BMW approved to have the redesigned head installed.
Now about a month after the new head being installed, i noticed the lifters ticking again last night.
What do you think my next step in this process should be?

Turn up the music? Seriously, I wonder if any damage is actually being done, or is it just annoying.

Yeah, I did. Dealer didn't seem to mind the warranty work. I told the sa I heard a ticking noise like a tractor, he said the tech would have to verify, they knocked it out in a half a day. Now I've got the new lifters, and some peace of mind, but I still wonder if there is really an issue, or if it is just a 'cosmetic' issue.
I kind of wonder why some people on this board have had a hard time getting this dealt with. Frankly it is easy money for the dealership.

My lifters used to tick when it was cold out and went away when the car warmed up, but then got to a point where it was constantly ticking. I had my lifters replaced and the issue has come back when it's cold. I'm around 3 months away from my warranty expiring and hope I can catch it to show the dealer before then.

Has anyone explored doing a head upgrade or aftermarket work? Say a ported head, 3 or 5 angle valve job, better cams, etc.? Most 07's already are or are near the end of their warranty period. For those paying out of pocket or getting full head replacements perhaps this is the way to go as this chassis ages.

apparently, according to the latest issue of BIMMER, the cylinder head did not fix the ticking. They said BMW permanently fixed the problem by "replacing the HVA's in the exhaust camshaft carrier"

I believe HVA = hydraulic valve pushrod = lifter

I had the same issue with my 07 328.
Eventually BMW replaced my lifters and head. This was covered under warranty, out of warranty this repair job is supposedly around $5k. I had this done in 2010 and the issue has no resurfaced.

Delta0311,

Could you tell me which dealer in NJ did this work? I am in Central NJ and experiencing the same noise with my 2008 328XI. Thanks.

I have a 2007 E92 330i. How will I know if I have this problem? What does it sound like?

I've found loads of threads about the potential fixes but not many of how to spot of you have the problem in the first place?

Thanks

But seriously, you'll know if you have this issue. It's impossible to not hear the ticking coming from the engine bay.
