Problem: e90 325i engine noise

I have e90 325i with 1000 miles on it. I recently discovered a strange noise coming from under the hood. It is july production. My wife drives the car 90% of the time and we strictly follow the break-in period recommendations. It's my first problem.

The noise is not loud and sounds like wweeeeeee~. The engine only makes the noise at greater than 1K RPM with transmission at D or P. It is barely noticeable from inside during driving with all the windows closed. I noticed it when my wife drove by me once. I doesn't seem to happen all the time too. With the gear in P, of several tries of high RPM idle, may be the engine makes the noise ~50% of time.

Does anyone have experiented the same problem?
Does anyone know what the source of the problem is?
I hope it is an uncommon problem, but you should check it since I couldn't hear it from inside the car.

have the dealer check out, I dont' have as much miles as yours, but engine from the outside should be very quiet, because I've done it few times, I have CA and sometime I forgot to stop the engine, from the outside you can't hear a thing, or at least the noise level was not noticeable, there was once I left the engine run from more than hours!!

I don't think it is the fan. By the way, the noise is like whine.

Have you listened to another automatic BMW before ?

Just making shure you are not worring about the normal whiny sound a automatic BMW makes.

You could ask you service manager to just quickly listen to it and see what he says.

I never thought BMW would be that quiet to begin with, that's what Lexus is good at, I'm not saying your noise is 100% normal, but I'd say 90%. Being that I have a manual, it's a lot more noisier than a step, I have a whole bunch of weeees and waaas when I'm accelerating/de-accelerating, from the engine and drivetrain. Just something to think about.

Get it checked out. And other cars passing by WILL sound quieter, have someone drive your car and listen to it.

I recorded the engine whining noise and attached it here.

Basically, as I was driving the car from stop to 20MPh, I held the recorder outside and recorded the whining noise. You'll hear the whining noise followed by a wind noise as I approach 20MPh. The engine was cold during the recording. Hope this is useful for others.

I have appointment with a dealer in few days. I'll update you guys on this as well as other problems that I experienced.

What's more interesting is that you've had the car for 10-11 months and you only have 1000 miles on it?

Sorry. My original was posted several months back and I recently was able to record it. Now I have 6K miles on it.

my car has a slight whining noise, noticeable in ds mode and at moderate revs.

i understand this to be the standard auto tranny noise. it is not what your car is making as mine sounds more like a turbine noise and doesnt sound too bad at all.

i cannot hear it in d mode.

all the best having it fixed.
