Come on.

I can guarantee that you didn't quip to the Audi driver "ultimate driving machine".

It is patently obvious he really rattled your cage, as can be seen by all your panicky questions seeking reassurance. I can see your ashen, wide eyed face as he was gesticulating to you. You weren't so swaggering and "macho" then ...

You may say you knew what you were doing - but obviously not, as the outcome startled you. That is the WHOLE point, it is never safe to do that on the public road.

And I don't drive everywhere slowly. But neither do I feel the need to "race" around like a daft wee boy (chav or otherwise). Saying "other boys do it too" is churlish.

Man up. Learn your lesson. Chalk it up to experience. Move on. Be careful.

Enjoy yourself instead of worrying.

D.

I say give the guy a break.
He had a bit of a race with someone - it happens - and he give himself a bit of a scare.
I think he will be more careful in the future.

If we all drove like grannies all the time, we would have just bought a nissan micra

I'm not a police officer, but I have had some experience being pulled myself and I also have a little bit of 'insider' knowledge.

Using the left indicator is quite unusal for your average motorist, but if you are unlucky enough to experience it you will find that the police do this when they pull you over (even with the 'blues and twos' on)

I don't think this was an umarked car, but I do have a feeling he may have been an off duty police officer - maybe even a police driver - because of the way he used the indicator (they do have private lives you know).

I've actually been stopped twice by off duty policemen private cars. Each time they called their colleagues for help and they soon arrived in marked vehicles.

The police used to refer to the higher powered vehicles used for traffic enforcement as 'county cars' (in the days of 3.0 litre vauxhall senators). This was because the vehicles were for use throughout the county and driven by specialist officers, unlike the smaller 'panda cars' which were specific to a particular police station and used by anyone who needed one.

Since the police force is no longer organised by county, these are more usually called 'area cars' these days.

As I said before - you definitely have NOT been nicked, because he would have had to pull you over.

BTW - you wouldn't necessarily see the lights hidden in the grille unless he switched them on. Plus - if he was CID his car might only have a demountable roof top light - like in the american films.

but if he wanted to pull me over to nick me, he surely would have put the flashing lights on which are situated in the grill?

thanks

I think he may have been an off duty officer in his own car - so he wouldn't have any lights, cameras or radio.

I'm probably wrong, but it does sound a little like this may have been the case. He may have accelerated to get a closer look at you and could even have phoned in your plate for a stolen car check.

I've been pulled over twice by policemen who were not 'at work' and were in their own cars (one was off duty CID).

Obviously we all know that you need to watch out for marked police cars and the scamera partnerships. Most people are also aware of the unmarked traffic cars on our roads.

My point is that you also need to think about all the 'on duty' CID drivers in totally unmarked vehicles and any off duty policemen that you are bound to come across.

If I am travelling quickly and someone appears to be going significantly faster I assume he (or she) is probably police and let them pass - just to be safe.

An unmarked cop won't fuss to much about speeding (since they all do it as well), but if you look like you may have nicked the car then they will show a bit of interest.

Only for unmarked traffic cars.

The police have a number of totally unmarked cars:

http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/ne...e_vehicles.pdf

CID vehicles for instance usually just have a small beacon that the driver reaches out through the side window and sticks to the roof

No, because in either case the car would have to be fitted with a VASCAR system. VASCAR is the highly accurate distance over time system that the police use in such circumstances.

Also, something to note for future moments of stupidity: Unmarked cop cars normally have 2 or 3 small arials sticking out of the boot lid. It's one of the only tell tail signs to check, but obviously you have to be behind them!

Of course, needforspeed is bang on when he says you should always consider a rapidly approaching vehicle to be an unmarked police car. This also applies to any car that matches your speed (as he could be using VASCAR to ascertain your speed).

He probably knows the way police cars operate (but that doesn't make him a policeman, I suspect NFS isn't a policeman either and he knows) and wanted to stop you and thought "I know how to look like i'm an unmarked car".

I must admit it is a tough one... do you drive on or stop if there are no blue flashing lights. It would be tempting to stop but probably wrong to do so as you could have some nutter in the car.

I wouldn't have stopped either.

Just as an aside - the cop's don't need vascar to do you for speeding, but without it they need the evidence of 2 officers.

This means it's very unlikely that you will be nicked by a single officer in a local 'ford fiesta' type patrol car, since they don't have the kit.

Could be right ... but I wouldn't have stopped either way. I'd have slowed to 70 and let him pass, (whilst crossing my fingers).
