Rob Beck Turbos - Going In

Had these installed today. Unfortunately, I had to leave before it was all buttoned up. Reports are the initial test drive went good. Will get down to load an upgraded turbo map and pick up the car tomorrow after work.

(last pic is the old turbos, that look to be in perfect shape - tuned since June 2007).

More feedback to come soon.

No that rig just holds the engine up so you can remove the mount

What is the frame of this turbo?

I saw many people upgrade to this turbo.

Is it any good? What specs?

journal bearing or ball bearing?

What wheel is it?

Air flow?

I believe they did lift it up a drop just to get better clearance to make install easier

Scott, what was your overall turn around time on this? Also, how much for the install?

Thanks.

It's about 10-11 hours for someone patient and methodical that has done it many times before (with a lift, all the right tools and parts).

It was well worth it for both parties to get it done by someone with great experience.

The book time is just under 16 hours (15.7)

+1 Excellent idea.

FYI, Rob Beck has one set of upgraded turbos available that are not yet taken. He's not allowed to say it here as he does not have vendor status, but if anyone's interested - now would be a good time...

For the record, you can install these yourself too. But I wouldn't attept it without an engine support / hoist, a lift, a massive set of tools, good mechanical knowledge, a second car to drive around in the meantime, and a fridge full of beer. lol

Update us when you pick the car up!

It can be done with jackstands, a decent floor jack, some assorted blocks of wood, and a marginal set of mechanics tools. You do not need to support the engine from the top or a lift, although it's probably nicer being able to do it that way. Determined DIY'ers can definitely do it, but it sure is a lot of work.

scottp999 summed it up well above, good experienced shops with the right tools can do it much faster. A good DIY'er with minimal aids as listed above will spend at least 16 hours on the job. It also takes a lot of endurance, patience, and strength. A mechanically inclined contortionist could probably knock at least a couple hours off the job, if you know one
