I think the 272bhp variant was introduced with the e92. The facelifted 530i now gets this engine also, as does the X3 and X5.
The e90 has the 258bhp variant, as does the 630i and 730i. The 130i and Z4 get the 265bhp variant. Wikipedia has more info.

The current e90 330i has the N52B30 engine. There was supposed to be a new version of the 3.0 litre engine which had the direct injection system from the 335i. So the 330i would get a fuel economy advantage, plus a few more horses (272hp) Aparently there are some problems with the DI systems and fuel quality in various parts of the world and as a result this engine upgrade has been held back. There is also a suggestion that the current 335i is only operating in partial 'lean burn' mode in some markets (which includes the USA). The DI engine will be called the N53, when it is eventually introduced, according to this article this will be in the 530i: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N53 At the same time as this upgrade was being discussed BMW introduced a separate 272 hp upgrade of the 3.0 litre engine which was put in the z4 3.0si and the X3 3.0si (the s bit signifying the upgrade). Strangely this upgrade has not made it to the 330i (yet). According to this wikipedia article it should have happend late 2006: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N52 According to bmw.co.uk the saloon still as 258hp, but the coupe has 272hp. http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/pricesand...-bmwuk,00.html http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/pricesand...-bmwuk,00.html This is also the case with the 320i e90 / e92 - coupe is more powerful. I guess this is just a case of putting the latest engine in the newer model car first. Bloody confusing for the customer though.
