Drag Racing is Like Drugs

I just can't seem to kick the habit. Took the lowly 335i sedan to the drag strip again today along with Mike (Alpine_e82/Car Whore) and brought back some more numbers with some progress. This time we went to Gainesville Raceway instead.

Vehicle Specifications:
'08 335i E90 6AT
JB3 1.3_8C2 map 8 (really map 7 based on 1.22 list)
275/40R17 Nitto 555Rs @ 21-23 psi
stock airbox, stock intercooler, stock DPs
~100 octane - Sunoco 260 GT 100 octane, 1/8 tank

DA:
(167ft elevation, 63 decreasing to 57F air temperature, 30.03inHg, 37 increasing to 41F dew point)
7pm (1st run) = +443ft
8pm (5th run) = +185ft
9pm (6th run) = +50ft

Adaptation routine:
Been running on 100 octane all week. Tried to run the tank as empty as possible in 3 successions. Went to the pump and dumped in 5 gallons of the good stuff in Jax and drove down all the way to the track with the same tank of 100 octane gas.

1st run:
60' 2.114
1/8 8.213 @ 91.43mph
1000 10.538
1/4 12.492 @ 115.35mph
*1st gear launch with not too much wheel spin

2nd run:
60' 2.146
1/8 8.262 @ 91.13mph
1000 10.595
1/4 12.551 @ 116.23mph
*1st gear launch with very mediocre launch

3rd run:
60' 2.138
1/8 8.237 @ 91.46mph
1000 10.564
1/4 12.519 @ 115.66mph
*1st gear launch with more spinning

4th run - 2.208, 12.741 @ 114.63 (lane I ran in apparently was very slippery and they decide to clean it after my 5th run)
5th run - 2.342, 13.081 @ 114.60
6th run - 2.158, 12.789 @ 113.12 (an hour later after nonsense track prepping)

Compare it to last time at Orlando Speedworld (3/21/09):

Quote:
JB3 1.3_8A5 map 8 (really map 7 based on 1.22 list)

DA:
+466ft @ 8PM (Alt: 55ft, 65F, 30.10inHg, 58F dew point)
+338ft @ 9:05PM
+228ft @ 10:30PM

Adaptation routine:
Approximately 15miles from the drag strip, gauge reads empty (needle doesn't move up on ignition start). I fill up gas tank with 2.5 gal of 100 octane. Performed 5 WOT runs from 1st gear to 3rd gear (30-120mph). I knew it was well adapted by the time I got near the track as I would get wheel spin in 2nd gear on a WOT run.

1st run:
60' 1.979
1/8 8.115 @ 90.79mph
1000 10.457
1/4 12.424 @ 114.90mph
*with a 2nd gear launch while spinning out of the box

2nd run:
60' 2.326
1/8 8.685 @ 90.18mph
1000 11.031
1/4 12.999 @ 113.98mph
*2nd gear launch still spinning; track prep was terrible

3rd run:
60' 2.249
1/8 8.670 @ 89.93mph
1000 11.026
1/4 13.005 @ 114.23mph
*2nd gear launch still spinning when I backed off twice and accidentally jabbed it too hard to downshift to 1st
**Traction continues to be my biggest problem. Better tires will be necessary from this point on.

**8C2 seems to be progressing/improving nicely from previous versions of JB3 1.3. I want to thank Terry for listening closely and adjusting his tune accordingly.

**I have reached a crossroad in determining what to do with this car next: trade up (GT-R or 997TT) or add more bolt ons

Witness
:
*Mike (Alpine_e82/Car Whore) had some great runs. Got a much better time (12.2s) and much higher trap this time around (119.8 mph or something) - He has a 135i 6MT with JB3 1.3_8C2 Map 8, RR DPs, Code3 FMIC, 245/45R17 Nitto DRs, and DCI.

Drag racing is like sucking helium. It's fun for a while, but doesn't last long. The novelty wears out pretty quickly. Try some good 'ol track work. Much longer "high."

But...to each their own.

Point taken. That's why I'm considering trading up to a GT-R, GT3, or maybe a 997TT for some track fun. The 335i feels like it needs quite a few more mods before it can really be my worthy weekend track car.

When are you going to hit the track again? I think with the new 8C2 software, you could be pulling 118+mph with VP109 and >11.70s with your tires and good launches on some decent tracks.

Or you could start bolting more mods on and break into the 120+mph club.

+100 to drag racing addiction

Nice runs. Better grip may be in order but have you tried a 2nd Gear launch with the AT? I thought HotRod has done this consistently.

It is hard to say whether I should be doing a 2nd gear launch or not. My 6th run, I did a 1st gear launch with brake torquing to only 1200rpm but I had a launch with no wheel spin at all through the 60'. Sure enough, I still only get a 2.158 60' time.

My issue tonight was not because of the initial launch (1200 or 1500 rpm brake torquing and releasing does not cause it to spin) as I hooked perfectly every time on the holeshot. But as the boost rapidly kicks in and I get about 30' into the strip, I've already rolled the throttle too far and cause massive wheel spin before the shift to 2nd, which I continue to spin. Ideally, I would back off to stop the wheel spin and try to keep my tires on the edge of adhesion. Does not work with this car. My 5th run, I had rolled the throttle so slowly with wheel spin still and the tranny decided to shortshift to 2nd. Killed my start but I had to keep it that way to not slide across the track.

I conclude that it is most likely the track being dusty and dirty as others were having the same exact problem that I did. In addition, I'll be needing real slicks as those that had them could launch perfectly fine (1.5-1.6s 60's).

The Nittos take quite a lot of heating up and aren't that sticky even when you reach the right temperature. I see why many have moved to Mickey Thompson ET Streets or Hoosier Drag Radials since they are much stickier and heat up much more easily.

Here are the results to Mike's run:

We followed each other down to Gainesville Raceway and he ran right after me every time on the same lane.

Quote:

JB3 1.3_8C2 map 8 (really map 7 based on 1.22 list)
245/40R17 Nitto 555Rs @ 20-23 psi
Riss Racing Downpipes | BMS DCI | BMS CDV | Code3 FMIC
~100 octane - Sunoco 260 GT 100 octane, 1/4 tank

1st run:
60' 2.163
1/8 8.118 @ 94.62mph
1000 10.394
1/4 12.311 @ 119.89mph
*1st run of the day - was focused on stomping Brian!

2nd run:
60' 2.063
1/8 8.088 @ 93.10mph
1000 10.372
1/4 12.293 @ 119.92mph
* Delays between 2-3 & 3-4 Shift (not driver error!)

3rd run:
60' 2.163
1/8 8.357 @ 92.42mph
1000 10.654
1/4 12.583 @ 119.07 mph (this was my 120+ run!!)
*Wheel Hop in 2nd made me get off and back on it.

4th run - 1.96 60' | 12.28@117.5mph

Last run - 2.025 60' | 12.25@116.5mph

In Summary: Although I've improved launching this car, I still stand by two major holdbacks are: 1) Clutch Delay between shifts, 2) Terrible Gear Ratios.

What I still need to improve myself is consistently meeting 1.8/1.9's which I feel I'm very close to breaking thru that barrier. (4th time at the track for a total of about 20 passes).

The tune is rock solid all the way to the top, and to be honest it PULLS like a freight train to 140-150 area. I will break into the 121-122mph with these mods just need some track prep like we saw on our last run... very sticky!

Compare it to last time on 93 (pump!) at Orlando Speedworld (3/21/09):

1st run:
60' 2.172
1/8 8.309 @ 91.40mph
1000 10.639
1/4 12.640 @ 113.50mph
*major wheel hop at launch thus backed way out of it

2nd run: | An hour later!
60' 2.222
1/8 8.343 @ 92.32mph
1000 10.660
1/4 12.610 @ 116.31mph
*Bogged it outta the hole (about 2500rpm launch) and then she woke up in 2nd

3rd run: | An hour and fifteen later!
60' 2.207
1/8 8.389 @ 92.45mph
1000 10.702
1/4 12.651 @ 116.33mph
*against another 135i but he was 6AT he ran 12.764@111mph w/100oct v1.22 map 7

Nice times guys....I almost made the drive up there. A couple of my friends did, i couldn't get away from work in time. My friends were the ones in the red C63, black e55, burgundy c63 and burgundy Viper with the nice big shot of Nitrous that trapped 140 My friend in the e55 said he saw your cars running.

Yeah saw those guys coming in after us. We were the 1st to line up.

Those guys ran some nice times, 12.0 and 114mph I believe in the red C63, mid 11s and 120+mph on the RENNtech E55. Didn't see how that Burgundy C63 ran with his DRs. That Viper GTS was insane! I thought it was stock until he opened the trunk to check to pressure on his NOS tank!

Track was dusty and still spin city for us but it was fun.
