Correct ECU info?

so I was looking for which ECU I had today and came across 2 different codes.

My COBB AP said this:

"I8A0S"

My BT TOOL said this:

"I860S"

On COBB's website they recognize these two ECU's as being different, so I was just wondering which one is right?

and also, could this be why my COBB won't fully uninstall if the ECU info is not right?

My car was built in 10/22/2007 if anyone can confirm which ECU I should have.

Cobb won't fully uninstall??? First off is the Cobb currently installed on your vehicle? If so then you should contact Cobb to see why it wont uninstall. Since you bought the Cobb unit used it seems like whomever you bought it from did not uninstall it from his car hence the AP showing his DME info and the BT tool showing yours. If this is case then you will need to send the AP back to the original owner and have him uninstall it from his car. This is what I'm guessing happened as the Cobb AP and BT tool show the same info for my car.

Yes the cobb is installed on the vehicle. When I try to uninstall it will get to 100% and then it will say "Cannot Communicate with ECU" and go into "Recovery mode" every time.

I contacted COBB about it and they said something about the battery needing to be hooked up to an external source (jump box or something) or the ECU won't be able to get enough power or something...I didn't have an external source and any more patience so I just called it quits and left it on there for the time being...

The COBB can still flash maps and fully go through Recovery Mode after it gives me that ERROR but it just wont complete an uninstall for some reason.

and I thought if the car didn't match the info stored on the AP it wouldn't let you install the AP in the first place?

Ok sounds like your battery is a little weak, another way to hook to an external source without a charger or something is to jump it to another car, have the other car running but leave yours shut off. Or try going for a long drive and see if that'll juice up the battery a bit say a 30 min drive.

As far as why the AP and the BT tool show two different DME's. I dont know all I know is that mine matches up I have the IJEOS DME.

I really don't think it's my battery... I flash my maps and did the entire Recovery process fine without an external source.

I can't help but think that the incorrect ECU data must be from the previous owner.

I know that after I installed the Cobb, I backed-up the OEM ECU data to my computer in case something crazy happened to the Cobb, I would always have a copy.

I would hook the Cobb to your computer and see how many "ROM" files it has stored.

The name of the ROM file will also reflect the car that it came from.

Guess what?!! I am in the same boat as you! I bought a BRAND NEW Cobb AccessPort from a highly reputable vendor here last fall.

The Access port detected that my ECU is I8A0S, but in actuality this is what the BAV tool is detecting:

I've been running the wrong ECU firmware from day one! I've been having constant driveability issues with Cobb, weird stuff happening to my car like the radiator fan turning on randomly, and most recently a series of seemingly incurable misfires.

Needless to say I am very pissed about this. I'll be sending all of this feedback to Cobb.

hmm yeah... so the last few lines on that BT tool info is the right ecu code? or do you think the BT tool says I860S for ANY vehicle?

can anyone else with a BT tool plug it up and see what their's says?

Hey Gents,

The ECU stores revisions to which it has been flashed by the BMW tools. Think of it as a log of the ECUs flash life. My guess is the Bav tool is not reading down the array of previous ROM revisions. If you request the top, you get the oldest version or what the ECU was first flashed too. I860S is quite old in the MSD80 world.

vasillalov and AU335i,

When was the last time the dealer updated your ECU?

Cheers,
Rob

sometime back in August. is there any other sure method of figuring out what code you have or would you say the COBB is accurate?

AU335i,

Were my guys able to get you sorted out on uninstalling? The MSD8x ECUs do very weird things when the battery voltage goes low. It may seem like all is ok because something seemed to complete ok, but it may not have. Having a good voltage is very important.

Cheers,
Rob

EDIT:
Mine was last reflashed in Jan 2011 during the HPFP and Injector recall campaign.

If your ECU was updated in Aug 2011, it most certainly is the latest at I8A0S. The AP is reporting correctly.

I quit in frustration before trying to hook up the battery to charge it... only reason why I was trying to uninstall it was because I was/might still be having problems with the tune and/or car. Been emailing Ian though so hopefully everything gets worked out!

Is this your timing drop issues - I remember you made a thread about it I think?

I'll send an email to Bavarian Technic asking for more info on how their software detects the Program Reference. This is weird to say the least...
