Bit unfair, that - Acerboo says he prefers the "d" over the "i"......

My driving is a mix of suburbs/busy traffic and my 335i averages 22 mpg.
Motorway runs are rare but will return around 32 mpg.

To be honest, I'd never have chosen the "i" if I was doing big mileage, but I still think it is acceptable economy given the spectacular performace on offer, and it does sound lovely on the move (not so great when idling).

just for reference, in a 325i 2.5l engine I'm getting 22-23 mpg in a short, 2mil morning run. I live far enough from work to take the car in bad weather but not close enough to walk it every day. Hence I drive short distance and engine is cold (car is in warm garage though). I think my consumption is monstrous compared to highway which is in high 30s.

My fuel bill is roughly 100 EUR per month so it's not so bad when all is said and done. Partly the reason I sold my 320d is I drive so little nowadays.

BTW, your consumption on wide tyres will obviously be higher than on narrower lighter wheels. So you have to check against that when comparing yourself to others/factory figures etc.

I had a mapped c320cdi previously and planned to replace it with a 335d. But when I drove the 335d I found the power delivery to be a little too linear. Yep undoubtedly fast (well marginally quicker) but not as fuel efficient and not exciting.

Drove the 335i and was blown away by the noise and power delivery - very similar output to the diesel but totally different experience.

With the mods I have now there is more torque than a stock 335d, lots of power and even more noise. When getting on it down a back road a petrol cars character will win hands down for me..

Driving 20k a year, I recon i spend less than a grand more fuelling the i than would the d... Which I can swallow for the occasional fun days!

If driving the average 12,000 miles a year the difference is pretty minimal.

Taking into account an average 335i driver gets 27mpg and an average 335d gets 34mpg the difference is less than £400 per year at current fuel prices.

Given diesel will continue to rise in price out of proportion to petrol that gap is only going to get closer and closer.

Buying a second hand 335i over a d and saving thousands makes common sense to the vast majority in a financial sense.
