how to tell temperature of engine?

hey everyone, just had a quick question. I was wondering how to find the temperature of the engine? It seems that there is no temp guage, so in that case where can it be found? Thanks.

Do a search on this question....There was a thread on this already. There is no temp guage but you can tell by the engine oil level.(I think)

I think this question came up before. With e90, you do not have to be concerned with looking at the eng temp gauge (there is non). The car will tell you when the engine is overheating, first you get a warning-yellow temp icon, then you get a red icon (that's when you almost shit in your pants if you are on a long trip away from home). Other icon might also appeared like the water coolant icon. Hope that helps...

I like using the temperature guage to know when to switch the heat on... just have always done that. I miss it for that.

There's some kind of guage marker right around the Tach, that goes around the ring. It is a little "stripe" looking thing. Apparently, that is where you shouldn't rev that car when starting off cold. Then it starts to go higher in the RPMs as the temperature of the engine gets warmer.

I know it might sound confusing, but for those of you who have used Cruise control and have noticed the little marker that marks the cruise control speed, it's kinda like that. I'll post a pic of it as soon as I can.

You will find in a search that the N52 engine doesnt run at a set temperature and changes its temperrature to suit the driving conditions. This would freak people out if it was shown on a temp guage

It has been discussed before:

I have never seen them move either.

That sucks if there is no way to get the temp reading. I wonder if BMW can reprogram the iDrive to provide engine function information.

The newer car has a digital reading guage; mostly it would show in the middle. And when the engine is over heated, the indicator will move to red area.
It is the same as what we have in E90; no, E90 has better indication system. We got the yellow warning before the red.

that is how it works in the 5....the stripes move according to temp. When there are three left, engine is warmed up. Common sense would tell you that the engine oil takes longer to fully heat up as opposed to coolant.

When the temp dropped to near freezing here early in the week I noticed that if you turn the heat on in auto mode while the car is cold, almost no air comes out. It only starts going strong when the engine has warmed up. It was strange for a while because I was trying to get the darn thing to blow more air and it wouldn't... not until the car warmed up!

I think it's quite unconventional not to have a temp guage and it feels kind of stupid. The AC is trying to be too smart to compensate.

That's a good design; unlike other cars blow cold air.

It is good design in the absence of a temp guage. But it is also confusing especially the first time. Also, some cars don't rely on the engine heat to heat the passenger cabin and I was wondering if the E90 was one of them. I thought the something was wrong with the heating system until later in the ride.

No engine oil temp for reasons mentioned above, but if you're adventurous, you can access the hidden obc functions to display coolant temp.

See item 7.00 on this thread:

This kind of behaviour is also found in my 96 volvo 850 when you switch the air current to AUTO. I think what it does is to only pump out some warm air if there is actually warm air to pump out. The current is stronger as the engine temperate raises.

THis is rather useful when you think about it since you don't need MORE cold air when you are freezing!
