Depends on which metal ticking noise, but the one most people complain about is the fuel pressure release valve, you will know it is the pressure releases valve cause if you blip the throttle it goes away. It will come back after a second or two. (this is a normal noise on this car).

If the tick is anything else other then the above, I'm not sure.

First and foremost, find out if ticking is speed-related or RPM-related. Speed related = drivetrain related, RPM-related = engine related.

I think Jeff may have it. But I have never experienced this till today actually. So I can't say I agree that the sound is normal. It does go away if I blip the throttle and reoccurs when the RPMs get back down to ~600.

I had this same ticking sound on my 07 when Idling; Applying little gas will make it go away and after letting off it comes back. Haven't had it for couple of months tho. I thought they were the lifters.

I have it too. It may be the alternator pulley. Only happens when its cold out, regardless of engine temp.

Had a similar sound on mine, turned out the Torque converter bolt was not torque correctly and torque converter was not seated correctly. The noise would happen once in awhile, only when it was cold outside. The dealer fixed the issue and no more metal clicking noise.

It's either I deal with that garbage on idle with the Cobb installed. Or uninstall the Cobb and have the usual waste gate rattle with deceleration...

Not the injectors- they make a ticking sound; not the waste gates, famuliar with that rattle in a tin can sound. This sounds like a small hammer hitting the side of the block, or a timing chain slapping something; even slightly like a main bearing.

I know some engines use a timing chain tensioner which uses oil pressure to press a small "shoe" against the side of the chain to keep tension elevated. Not sure if the N54 does as well, or that's a factor.

I just notice mine today and came across this thread. Noticed it at the drive-thru.
I just ordered a cobb and my CPO just expired this month. Sound like the rocker arms or valve tap. I guess I am going to see if BMW will take a look before I install the COBB.

Yes, that is normal. That is the fuel pressure release valve. The HPFP pushes a lot of pressure that is excessive at idle.

Mine Also makes that noise. If you touch the throttle very slowly, so slightly that the rpms don't even increase, the noise goes away for a second. Weird.
