OEM dual mass flywheel resurfacing...?

Can the oem flywheel be resurfaced? Well can this one?

Yes, but only a few shops can/will attempt to do so. Steve Dinan told me he CAN refinish/lighten them, but I haven't tried so with them. Unfortunately the internal spring/damping mechanism inside the FW can get weak or break, so it's not a good idea to reuse an N54 dual mass flywheel, especially one that looks like it's been abuse like that one!

A new one isn't that expensive if you don't buy it at a dealership. It's actually manufactured by LUK - I bought it new for 500 EUR, less than half of what BMW asks for it.

They want $1100 for the flywheel here. I had mine resurfaced when installed new clutch, works great.

Ok ya this is the issue I really don't want to spend close to $1k for an oem flywheel which is why I got the Clutchmasters FX300 w/ their lightweight flywheel but I am just worried that it will rattle like crazy and I hate having to hold the clutch in at stop lights so people don't look over at my car thinking it is about to fall apart.

How much does resurfacing cost? and if i decide to upgrade to a flywheel later on can i still do it once already installing new clutch?

I always heard of people getting the OEM flywheel for around $500, I wonder if this is it.

Anyone see any issues with going with the LUK unit over the Genuine BMW one?

Mine was $980. I couldn't find a cheaper one, much less one for $500. For those who got it that cheap, please post a link. I have a 6-bolt FWIW.

If you get it resurfaced they must know what they are doing. It's not as simple as cutting down some metal like on a brake rotor.

I would go new personally.

I'm planning on going with the LUK unit with the spec stg 2+. Unless someone says something negative about the LUK unit.
I'll have a used oem flywheel next week that I can look for LUK markings on it.

I'd like to know exactly what is different process-wise of resurfacing a DMFW vs normal single mass.

I can assume, but I want to know for sure.

I had my old one done by a local shop who F'd it up (left with WAY more play than it went in with).

I'd go with the luk flywheel..I've used their clutches and flywheels in probably 10 cars(BMW and vw/Audi) and always had good results. They make tons of the oem units for people so the quality is there. As for the machining a used one-one person posted about play-that's because you have to somehow secure the flywheels springs from moving while machining it otherwise it will just beat the hell out of them during the process. I've personally never seen a dual mass flywheel properly machined and I'd never take the risk of having to go in there again over something like that-I'd either buy new or go with a single mass and deal with the noises.

This what I'm planning when completely necessary. ECS use to have the LUK for around $540, but I guess there's not much competition.

Just a heads up, most of your local auto parts places can get the LUK flywheel cheaper than online parts places.
I checked with my local carquest and they can get the LUK flywheel for under $500. Just wanted to pass that along to others to save a few bucks.

Do they carry a 6-bolt version though? ECS shows an 8-bolt only.
