N54 vs N55

A few people were saying the N54 was an absolute rocket and the N55 just isn't as good.

From personal experiences, what are some characteristics of both? Differences really.

Besides the technical stuff like issues twin turbo vs single turbocharger with twin scroll.

It might not be too bad getting a 2007 335 coupe after all.

Stock to stock, the 2011 e9x n55 put up slightly better numbers than the n54 according to car & driver.

Thus far, the n54 is waaaaaayyyy more modifiable.

There is rumor that early 335s have forged internals. Two people have opened up their engines and confirmed. After all, look at Shiv's 335. This thing has been modified from the early miles and now it has the single turbo on it and has 82k on the clock. I have both n54 and n55 and have to say they are both awesome.

not point in arguing. the fact that the 1M uses the N54 engine, it means it is superior to the N55 in terms of being able to push the engine to a higher limit, otherwise, they could have used the N55.

I predict the F80 M3 will use a modified version of the N54 engine, plus an additional turbo-charger.

Stock to Stock (I have both and very similar - N55 is supposed to make torque a little sooner) they are basically the same.

N54 is BMW's tuning platform of choice though!

I drove a N55 recently and it felt just as strong as my N54, if not a little more torque wise. That 200rpm earlier torque really puts a little more pop in some of the launches from slow speed I felt. (It was also an AWD, so that may have helped)

But my N54 does seem to pull faster top end, though - seems to never run out of breath.

STOCK, the N55 produces torque from lower rpms.. with a tune, the N54 has proved more tunable..

This is useless if we all put 76mm Single Turbos like Shiv and HPF

What are forged internals? Please explain.

The 07'-08' had forged pistons where as the 09' and later have cast pistons. Forged pistons r stronger than cast pistons but really not a big deal as long as the block is forged. Either way, 335's can handle a lot of horsepower w/o problems!

Yep. I traded my N54 535i for an N55 535i and I can totally see the difference. The N55 pulls harder from idle and runs smoother, but the N54 pulls harder above 4k rpm. I can totally see that the N55 does not have the second turbo because, on downshifts, the N55 does not have the same grunt that the N54 had. They both make the same power, but they make it a little differently. If you drive hard and rev to redline you will miss the N54....
