Hi

I have being having the stalling and stopping at the lights happen to me randomnly as well, mind you I drive an auto! had it in a shop with a BMW wonder boy, thought he was the House of BMW ( apparently) for over 3 weeks, changed battery and all coil packs....happened again!

I also told him my car seems to have heavy emmissions ( sometimes) when when car is warm, also another odd thing that happens is when car displays km/l sign without petrol puimp picture, intake changes from 0-99.9 km/l within 20 sec of drive on slight hill or even flat area, is this normal?......

anyone out there have any idea what would be wrong with this thing.....it is driving me CRAZY!!

Any help could be much appreciated

Ive noticed the car will randomly stall out on me when coming to a stop. Yes, my foot is on the clutch and (the times was paying attention to the car stalling) the brake too. The car does not stutter or buckle, it just shuts off as if I pressed the start/stop button. Ive filled up at different stations and always run 93 octane.

Ive also noticed some extended cranks, normally after driving the car and then restarting it 15-20 min later. This sounds like the HPFP but other than that I have no other issues that would point to the HPFP.

I do have an appointment with my local dealership for next friday but I wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue. I'm thinking they may not do anything if they cannot duplicate the problem.

Thanks for your post. Below I've pasted my comment from another board as well--same problem.

NE ideas? 2011 335i Perf Edition: stalls at idle (manual)

No luck with my Internet search so will try a new thread.

If you've got a 2011 335i with the "Performance Edition" (more power and torque via BMW software upgrade--and an extra sticker;-), have you had any stalling or idle issues in hot weather? Note: this is the N55 engine with the single turbo (new for the 2011 model year), not the N54.

Now that we've had some hot weather here in Texas our 335i has taken up an intermittent habit of stalling once or twice a day, but on a very random schedule. Sometimes it'll go for many days without a problem, however, thus making it the kind of issue that is likely to vex dealership techs since it won't do it all the time.

It has occurred on both really hot days (>100F), and when it's only been 80F. Possibly related problem: if at a long light and sitting in Neutral, the idle speed can sometimes drop from a steady 650 RPM to less than 500 RPM for a second or two, every 30 to 60 seconds, give or take. Then it returns to normal operation for a few days with a perfectly steady idle. I thought it might be related to load cycling on the AC compressor, but on a really hot day it would probably be at full load all the time, especially at idle, no?

Other data: stalls never occur with a cold engine. Only occurs when slowing to a stop, clutch fully engaged, or with the transmission in Neutral. No warning lights, Check Engine or MIL. We're using Premium, Top Tier gasoline, and it has the rare manual transmission. We've only got about 4k miles so far, even though we've owned it since late 2011.

Yes, I'll take it in eventually (dealership is very, very busy), but wanted some "been there, done that" inputs first, especially if there's a TSB for this problem. (There seem to be too many TSB's for the techs to know about all of them.)

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

p.s. Yes, it's got cruelty-free leatherETTE:-)

This exact problem happened to me too. I have an automatic but the symptoms were the same. Stalling when coming to a stop and fluctuations in the RPMS while idling. The problem started right after the dealer replaced my HPFP.

Try unplugging the battery for over 30 minutes and then plugging it back in. Then reset all the adaptations. It completely fixed the problem for me. Hope this helps!

It's been years, but my car experienced random stalling--it's not a fluke. The DME was replaced and that was the absolute end to the problem. The old DME was a MSD80. The new was a MSD 81. But 335is N54's are clearly newer than mine, which is a 2007, so it may not be the same issue.

Car is off tomorrow to dealer so lets hope they find a fix.
It's not apparent to me in reading the threads about these items:

All N54's?

Any N55's?

Late model or 2007-2010 only.

It would imply with your repsonse that stalling does include newer N55's.

I can't believe this is still going on. I experienced it when my car was just about 3 y.o., and I had to put up with it for nearly 6 mos. until they fixed it. I don't wish that experience on anyone. Good luck.

Sorry if I wasn't clear: the stalling is on a 2011 335i with the N55 and the Performance Edition Software upgrade.

All 2011 335i's in the US Market use the N55 engine; not all have the Perf Ed upgrade.

It hasn't really been an issue for me. The car only stalled once and that was over a week ago. However, I have noticed that now the RPM goes down low and bounces back to idle unlike before. Before when I pushed the clutch in, it would just come down and stop at idle.
Well, the lady with BMW NA was telling me that if i keep my car, they anticipate a fix in July (which is now), then later on during another conversation, she said August. When i asked her what the issue was and what the fix is, she would not tell me what was wrong with it and that she was not sure of the fix, but could only tell me it was another software update. She then added that she's not sure it is a definite fix, but that it's a possibility that the problem will persist. She pretty much said it's a trial and error thing, so i could try that. She was not confident at all in the "fix" they had.

After some going back and forth with my options, i just opted to just get a new car. I really was fed up with it (dying on the freeway!) and it just wasn't worth risking my life over it.

In fact, they didn't even want to offer me a replacement because they felt that i might have the problem again on the newer models as well. This to me further indicates that they probably won't have a fix for awhile if they are still unsure whether their 2013's will still have the problem.

If it happens again, then, this will be the last BMW for me. I'm opting for a prius next.

Ugh, avoid a Prius--worst steering on the planet. Absolutely no feel whatsoever; you will learn to loathe driving!

Give BMW another chance and see what happens, but stay with the E90's as the F30's aren't as good, sadly.

I got the Aug fix but after a few weeks, 1500 miles, engine is stalling again when coming to a stop with clutch pedal down and braking - major safety problem entering roundabouts here in UK. Told a software patch will fix but car needs to go to dealer for install. BTW stalls less often in colder weather, <10C.

Funny, (or not). I am experiencing this issue on my 08 328. I am not sure if it is exactly what some other are experiencing but I can replicate the issue fairly easily. My car doesn't typically stall but the revs drop and the engine struggles to fire back up. It has stalled out a few times and ,as others have mentioned, you can't fell it or tell at all. the car goes silent. It did it just the other day and I didn't notice until I went to accelerate and wasn't even at a full stop.

An example is, I am driving along at say 40mph. I see traffic slowing for a light so I lift of the throttle and push in the clutch. I am doing both at almost the exact same time, but I have noticed if I leave my foot on the throttle just a second longer, there is no issue. I have also noticed this typically only happens when the AC is also on.

The fuel cutoff mentioned in this thread makes a little sense, but this still should not be happening. It is extremely unsafe and reminds me of a family members Chrysler that did something similar. I guess I will take it in and have them check the sensors.

First time today

This just happened to me for the first time this morning. Coming to a stop in traffic and boom silence.

2008 E92 M3 6MT with 51k miles.

What are the options here, take it in and get charged an ass-ton because im out of warranty or suck it up. Im sure they will blame it on the CIC swap as well. Big corporations can never be at fault.

Possibly its time to look at a class action. This is the exact kind of scenario where we win

Don't mean to revive an old thread...

I can't seem to find any additional info as to what may be causing this type of stall. My car is a 2011 135i, and i have experienced similar stalling. Anybody have any new insight as to what the fix is?

I get it too. My problem is independent of the stop start function. The stop start at least restarts the engine most of the time. With stop start disabled it doesn't restart. Petrol 320i manual 2010

This just started happening to me too. 328 6spd. Its scary because the power steering dies too and I am scared I am going to lock the steering wheel. Has anyone come with a fix for this yet?

Not sure if this will help but as a last resort, check your air filter. My K&N filter developed a big tare on the neck and caused this.

I have since changed to a new one with some minor adjustments to prevent the tare. Since then, no more stalling and much smoother acceleration.
