A little birdy told me that BMS is going to start working on a meth kit for the 335d in the coming weeks.

Stupid question, but with more power at our disposal won't this meth addition run the risk of blowing the transmission? I mean with the JBD we are already at approx. 520 lb/ft torque right?

The only safe way to do this would probably have to be in conjunction with a custom tune.

That is a valid concern. Certainly this will not be for everyone just as running a tune is not, although this does take it to the next level. Personally I have been dieing to see a meth kit come out for the d, diesels respond very well to a water/meth injection or even just distilled water.

I suspect the transmission can handle well in excess of what ZF has it rated at. There are countless 335i's running around putting out hp and torque numbers far in excess of what their car's tranmissions are rated for and their tranmissions are rated much lower than our d's. Another example although more extreme, take a look at the new Vishnu 335 rated at 627hp, it still has the OEM transmission.

How is that?

Running a water/meth injection can be done in reasonably safe manner so long as the mixture ratios are right. Meth is like nitrous for diesels. Water/meth kits are quite popular among the diesel truck crowd for not only producing a few extra ponies but to reduce EGT's.

I understand how it works. the jbd and software tunes are already close to the claimed limits of the d's transmission torque rating adding meth could possibly run the risk of breaking something.

Nobody is claiming tuning does not come without risk, quite the contrary.

Given what I have seen and more specfically what these ZF transmissions can handle I am not concerned about a few extra ft lbs of torque. The water/meth kit will likely add more hp's and it can be delivered in such a manner that we might be able to add more hp up top where the d could stand to use a few extra to compensate for the taller gearing. Shoot I would be happy with the benefits of running just washer fluid.

Chris, thank you for finding this information and keeping our education up to speed!

This article makes it sound like adding injection would be all that is necessary to boost our engines, rendering a tune unnecessary.

Something that didn't appear to be addressed is what the EGT's did at the various enhanced performance levels. Also, it doesn't appear that the truck had our level of emissions system; I would be curious to know if there would be anything in the injection fluid and its results that would affect our emissions gear, either positively or negatively.

Hey no problem Joseph, it's fun for me! Just trying to do my part to progress the "cause." Water/meth actually works quite well in conjuction with a tune, but you are right, one should see some decent gains (engine size dependent) even without a tune.

I guess this would have been the better article to post first.
