Tapping unused steering wheel buttons?

I have a car without idrive/voice and without phone. This means I have two unused buttons on the left side of my steering wheel: "Voice" and "Phone".

Has anyone tried tapping into the wires for these buttons, to use for them something else? For example, it would be quite neat to have my garage door opener activated by one of them.

Not an easy task.
it seems you would need to tap into the cars computer.
I wish it could be done easily.

That would mean the signals are encoded digitally before exiting the wheel. Do you know this for a fact?

I have searched RealOEM trying to find images of what the connections look like, and this is the closest thing I've found.

Also in the "Msport Steering Wheel DIY" thread there are photos showing where the cabling from the buttons (number 1 in the above image) connect to the "hub" of the steering wheel, and it looks like there are at least five separate wires there (the black ones). This suggests those signals are analog and not yet encoded:

The image from realoem is not visible.
I don't know if the signal is encoded before exiting the wheel.

Contact Pac Audio, I used my unused buttons in my 2006 Audi A4 3.2. All the buttons are coded into one digital wire, with Pac Audio's module I was able to make it work with my aftermarket DVD-Player/Headunit (Kenwood 717DVD) Good luck!
