Canadian Diesel Fuels - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum

I miss Sunoco\'s \"Gold Diesel\" after they got snapped up by Petro Canada. Some of them are now known as Husky and they offer \"Diesel Max\" at their stations. I\'ve mostly used this fuel at Husky but I\'m not sure if it\'s the same fuel as the previous Sunoco brand.

We also have Shell\'s \"V-Power Diesel\" fuel which I just tried for the first time last week.

I personally stay away from Petro-Canada\'s diesel fuel.

What diesel fuel to fellow Canadians use? Does anyone even know the cetane value of the aforementioned diesel fuels?

Actually, PetroCanada diesel is supposed to have some of the higher cetane levels, up there with V-power or Sunoco gold. I run a variety of "brands" (many stations being fed by the same supplier, so not convinced they all get different fuel), based primarily on high usage by trucks, etc... so as to have a reasonable expectation of fresh, clean fuel.

Hey D,

It's almost next to impossible to get accurate cetane values from these oil companies. I've seen lists here and there online but never anything concrete.

Thanks D. I'm way too cynical and wish some independent company ran tests to determine the real cetane and other values of these oil companies.

I try and keep an open mind when it comes to different diesel fuels. I just filled up this morning with Shell V-Power for the second straight time. I was primarily going with the Husky "Diesel Max" before that. My next two fill ups will be at Petro-Canada. My mileage after my first V-Power was on par with the Husky diesel fuel but it felt like my car responded better with the Shell fuel.

On the topic of diesel.

Most of the major players are pretty good about their diesel. The formulation typically changes every two weeks.

During fall based on the formulation it might be prudent to fill every two weeks to be blending the fuel formulated for the colder weather. In spring the same holds true to make sure you are topped up with the colder weather fuel in case a freak cold snap catches everyone off guard.

I have noticed that some diesel from Flying J not performing very well in winter which makes me suspect since they are a US chain that they were selling summer diesel in the fall which led to very subpar mileage.

Personally I like the Shell V-Max Diesel.

I'll be heading up to the GTA later this month (car is finally coming out of storage)... do you guys have regular nozzles? I am lucky that around my area, I have never had to use the adapter. I have only filled Shell (we only have regular diesel). Do you guys have different types of diesel and what is the best brand to use?

I'm not sure how many stations in the GTA offer the V-max Diesel, but we have 2 grades of diesel. There is the regular ultra low sulphur diesel and then the performance ultra low sulphur diesel which is formulated for higher revving diesel motors.

In Saskatoon there are only 3 shell stations that carry this formulation and I do notice a difference, especially in the winter.

If you go online to the shell site you can get a list of stations that carry the V-max if you are interested. I always have the addresses of these stations whenever travelling so to keep the good stuff in the car.

^ Good advice, I think if I fill up before crossing the border, I may only need one fillup. I think your prices are quite a bit more than US.

I would like to try some of the premium since we don't have it around me. I do remember the first tank I put in was AGIP super premium (Austria). Not sure how that compared to my regular but why not put in the best if it is available?
