Mrs. Obioban's manual/rwd e91 Journal

Picked this up last week.

Rear wheel drive
NA
Manual
Hydraulic power steering
No DI
no iDrive

The last of the purchasable BMW's, imo, as all of the above were minimum requirements for me.

Currently it is a 328i, but soon it'll be a Supersprint header/evolve tune 330i, which should put it at (a reliable, NA) ~300 crank HP.

After this summer these wheels will become winter wheels, and we'll get something light/strong for the summer with real tires.

Needs M3/1M subframe bushing asap, and have to figure out what I'm going with suspension on it. Likely it'll be stock sport springs with Koni yellows or Bilsteins.

Roof rack will also be removed.

But, first order of business will be swapping all the fluids!

May dye the vinyl parts of the interior black for a two tone effect, undecided on that...

50,000 miles on the clock, currently. This should be a fun and reliable car for a long time, given how it's optioned.

I really love the non iDrive radio/sirius/bluetooth/ipod interface. Looks old school, but with new school functionality.

Really, BMW?

Official TIS instructions for mounting the OEM BMW iPod interface for e9X. Would a mounting bracket be too much to ask for?

At least they're consistent with the cabling for said iPod interface:

Absurd. I've never installed a module on any older BMW that didn't have a module and chassis specific brackets to mounted it. Zip ties!?!

Happy new wheel day! Every car got wheels they've never run before.

e46 got a set of anthracite RG-63's that I traded my hyperblack RG-63's for over the winter. Much better match for IR, imo!

e91 got a set of 17" BBS SR's. They look AWESOME now (way better than in this pic), but are going to look even better next week when we take it off the non sport suspension:

e39 got a set of 18" BBS RG-Rs in silver. Never seen silver RG-Rs before, the color goes quite nicely with Le Mans blue, I think!

... all cars need washes. It's been winter, what can I say :clueless:

Could have also used a non phone camera and non rainy day, but.. reh. arrot:

Things to get done this week:
-add drain plug to diff
-diff fluid swap
-trans fluid swap
-engine oil/filter swap
-cabin air filter
-engine air filter
-brake fluid swap
-roof rack delete
-eibach/koni yellow install
-OEM iPod MOST interface install
-evolve tune
-lots and lots of coding changes
-battery cable recall
-reset all the service interval indicators

Fairly long list, so may not get to all of it (especially as the M3 also has a couple projects)... but that's the goal. Roof rack delete is the most likely to get cut, if only because I won't be clean enough to do it after doing the others

Two more crappy phone pics of the BBS's. I am super enthused with them-- they match the lines and color of the car perfectly, without looking overly aftermarket, imo!

It's absolutely absurd how much of an improvement in ride/handling/braking/noise these michelins were over the stock runflats. The single worst part of the e91, imo, is the lack of spare tire well resulting from the runflat decision. I'm hoping to figure out a space saver spare solution for the trunk, that doesn't overly compromise cargo space, but... we'll see.

Plate was a transfer from her mini.

Probably won't be sticking around, we just haven't thought of a good plate to replace it with yet.

And... I used to be. They no longer make a single car I have any interest in. Turbos, EPS, automatics, and DI resulting in carbon buildup are all deal breakers for me. I'm actually at a bit of a loss as to what I'll be getting going forward, as there's not really anyone making what BMW used to be. Likely I'll just be keeping these for a long, LONG time, and hopefully adding a 997.2 GT3 to the mix at some point.

I meant to imply religious about the cars you own. And I agree, turning back the clock seems to be the best option looking forward.

Any plans for M3 control arms or Msport wheel? It's quite a drastic change.
Spare donuts are about $200 online in 17" option. Not familiar with the rear of an e91 but your only option might be to secure it under a cargo net, which would of course limit space.

Ah, yes, I do like to keep my car's tip top! The M3, in particular, I plan to never sell, so I do anything/everything to keep it 100% like new. The M5 is held to a lower standard, as it's the DD/"beater" (street parking, airport duty, train station, etc). It's kept mechanically maintained 100%, as I'm a huge proponent of preventatively fixing things rather than waiting for more expensive failure, but I don't sweat the details on it so much.

Yes to the M3 control arms. No to M sport wheels-- going to use the 17" BBS's for summer and stock 16's for winters. Control arms are not the next projects after this coming week, though-- next up is a new water pump, DISA manifold (though I'd like to wait to install this till the permafix for the flaps exists, so I only have to do the labor once), and SuperSprint headers. The control arms (well, bushings within) are a wear item, so the longer I don't do them, the longer the M spec units will last (generally speaking, I like to replace every bushings/bearing/ball joint in my cars every 100,000 miles to keep them driving like new... so I may wait till then to do the M3 control arms).

Yeah, there's always the cargo net option, but that takes a lot of space. I'd love to find at way to fit at least most of it under the floor...

I have a huge pile of parts to go in the wagon tomorrow-- I'll take a pic when I get home tonight

Nice thread and car you've got. Proper spec - NA RWD 6MT!

I'd suggest sport seats and steering wheel, standard seats are as rubbish as runflats. And I like the BBS', too, but in 17" size they look too small. 18" is they way on E9x. Oh, am I the only one to think that they have a design similiar to FI's?

Anyways, will keep an eye on this thread for sure.

I was debating them in 16", but no desire for 18". Function > form.

Seats may be done-- wife really likes the stock seats, which makes it tricky. Steering wheel... she really likes that it's heated :P

Suspension was more work than expected, but done now! On wednesday evening and today I did...
Koni Yellows
Eibach Springs
Diff fluid and drain plug addition
trans fluid
brake fluid
engine oil/filter
cabin air filter
engine air filter
spart plugs
rear lower shock mounts

Hands were too dirty by the time I was done to do the roof rack delete (even after multiple washings), so that'll have to wait for another day.

Here it is with ~5 miles on the suspension. Should settle another ~.5"

Also, it's Evolve cable came in the mail yesterday

22 lbs each.

Good wheels are 2 out of 3, no exceptions exist:
1) light
2) cheap
3) strong

These are 2 and 3. Crappy wheels... 1 or 0 of 3.

Still, 10 lbs down per corner, between wheels are tires (no longer run flats).

Absolutely gorgeous e91! I looked for one of these last August with the options I couldn't live without to no avail. Had to settle for the sedan, but now I can live through you vicariously. Keep up the great mods!

Too bad you're going with Evolve tuning when they have 0 experience with the N51 and still make the least amount of power of all the tunes I've seen.

Otherwise, looks to be a sick project - I'll be watching.
