Watchdog went with the cracked wheels issue and forced BMW's hand, the same should happen here as it's much more serious. I'm not impressed with paying over forty grand for a car that can be started without its key in ten seconds

Even a dymo sticker on the bottome edge of the door window saying 'WARNING OBD2 PORT DISABLED ON THIS VEHICLE' might be enough for them to pass by, at least they'll know you're onto that trick, and their risk level will be up.
There'll be a dozen more BMWs round the corner, unprotected, for them to choose from...... |

A blank OBD plug fitted & secured to the port in someway would be enough to put off most opportunist thieves, anything that will make the job longer & make the outcome less certain will help

12 volts? I don't think that's really going to hurt, do you?

A modern solid state electrice fence zapper in your boot will run from 12V for days, give you a pulsed 5000V output which you could wire, in suitable wire, to a little insulated metal trim next to the OBD socket just waiting for unwelcome fingers to come nearby.
As they're to stun cows they're pretty powerful and would knock you over, probably make you sick, and might even crack your head open on something as you jerked backwards. But then the scrotes would probably petrol bomb your car for dissin' them. Last edited by doughboy; 04-18-2012 at 06:51 AM. |

you got me thinking!!, if we was to put a false plug in there with a capacitor connected to the cambus wires, they would plug their £500 unit in and bang night night unit

Going by your YouTube post the OBD isn't exactly easy to see so connecting to it is more a matter of feel, so how difficult would it be to move it slightly & install another in its place suitably wired as above? The scroat may take his anger out on your pride & joy though

Yes, but with the additional circuitry. The implication was simply connecting 12v to the socket shell might somehow deter them.

IMO moving the port is best option if they do brake the glass they will have a feel realise something is a miss and move on they dont work quietly without a reason.
Other otpion is for example rig a alarm switch under the cover for the OBD port. So use a switch like under bonnet for alarm and bit of smart wiring and when they remove the cover pop goes the alarm. Cant see them hanging about.

Seeing these posts is starting to make me question my planned mods. At the moment my car in SE spec looks pretty understated, do I really want to increase it's desirability by putting on some bling wheels and therefore making it stand out?
It really pisses me off that we now seem to live in a a society where decent people who work hard to afford things like nice cars, live in perpetual fear of lowlife scumbags who think they can just takes things with impunity. |

thing is in case of a friend of mine it was a 06 plate standard 320D Sport with no options at all, and in need of serious body work due to dings dents and scratches you would struggle to sell it.
Yet it went walkies.

Currently, without being prepared for burglary and violence, kids are limited to nicking old fiestas etc, but with one of these they can all have a 750iL on their drive......or an old 320d just for the hell of it. Lunchtime over - I have my stickers ready!!!! |

I have just spoken to THATCHAM Security and they are aware of the problem but I been advised that it only affects the cars with comfort access - if you have a keyfob where you have to press a button & insert it into the dash then, according to Thatcham, there isn't a problem

If thats the case how come over cars with no comford access have been taken. Again mates e90 was basic and that went with both his keys still in his pocket and no additional keys ever issued.
