BMW E30 Restoration/Modification

Hi all,

Lately I've been thinking of buying an E30 chasis & restore/modify. Something like this. Any ideas? What should I lookout for in terms of condition, rust, engine problems, etc? I'm thinking of doing an engine swap, putting in an E36 328 engine or even an E36 M3 engine.

Also, any panel shop in Melbourne that can do the restoration?

I'm after a 2 door, preferably 1989-1991 model.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Man where do i start......
ok, Numero uno:..NEVER BUY A 318, m42 engines are beyond shit.

Best places to look for rust are under the right side of the boot (if the battery is located in the rear, look in the engine bay (again around the battery if it is there) and also around the fire wall and front chassis rails.

If you are defiantly going to do an engine swap, the badge clearly doesn't matter, so if you find one with a completely straight body grab it, they can be hard to find, as these cars have been around for 20yrs plus.

Interiors can also be iffy, most of these cars have a weather seal leak above ether the passenger or drivers side, and it leaks under the front carpets, there can also be leaks above the left side of the boot where the antenna hole is.

The most common problem these cars can come with is a leaky steering rack, next to that is a slight head gasket leak, as well as out of time tappets (not a big problem, but annoying).

On a personal note, why do you want a series two? The series one imo is nicer plus the chrome bumpers just look better....but that's me..

If your you don't go for an engine swap, i'd go a 325i if you want complete performance, or the 325e, if you want a bit more torque or fuel economy (325e's also have a higher engine displacement 2.7..if your into that).

Also another fun engine swap is the M30b35 out of the e34 535i, BIG 6 with just over 200hp (stock), and maintains the 12v linage.

need anymore help feel free to ask me.

HohnenRacing: Thanks for the info. Like u I personally prefer the series 2 look, especially with mtech 2 bodykit. Any idea where I can find an original kit or a very good replica?

& anyone can recommend a good panel shop for restoration here in Melbourne? & the most important question of all.....how much hahaha...

M-tech ll kits? Probs easier to just find a car with it already attached. It's too expensive to buy the kit separately, and it's not worth looking for a rep kit, probs wouldn't be many in Aus anyway..

HohnenRacing: Looking at your profile pict, it seems that your running BBS wheels. I'm thinking of running 18" BBS RS, any idea what width & offset? I dont mind stretched tyres, just not too much, still want driveability.

Eheh, not running bbs's yet..:P , that shot is photo shopped. But from knowledge with stock suspension you can run up to 9" wide all round, 18 should be fine, and well offset is up you depending on how much you want to modify the guards/how low you want the car..(Im looking at a set of 17x8.5s +20)

where do you get BBS RS's from? seems they are a bit hard to find. I notice that you can get new barrels & even a restoration kit to replace the bolts, but I'm having difficulties finding the center with the right diameter & offset.

RS's are hard to find full stop. They're also REALLY expensive, a set of 16" could set you back up to 3000. I'm currently looking at a set of RS Reps form Wheel Warehouse ( http://www.wheelwarehouse.com.au/?page_id=16&category=4 ), they do a set of 17x8.5's for 1200. The quality look's pretty good to.

If your set on looking for original's though, i'd look through e30 forums, or honda forums and maybe ebay Germany if you feel brave enough.
