Even if a rock was a trigger point, it doesn't mean that the moonroof isn't defective -- in the same way that we don't expect our front windshields to shatter when rocks bombard it (who knows what are the safety standards for moonroof since this is such a rare occurrence).

That is why it is so helpful to assemble the data to make a persuasive case to BMW and I hope you succeed. No doubt, BMW will drag their heels until then.
Just keep talking about it until BMW decides to fix the window. Nobody really gets it unless they have had that shotgun sound in their ear and had a couple of pounds of glass pebbles rain down their neck. Someone probably has to go off the road and kill a few people before this make it to the pages of USAToday then the glass will be thicker or whatever the solution ends the defect.

Those who have experienced the joy of exploding sunroofs, let's see if we can find some common themes. Post your car, build date, and mileage when the sunroof shattered and conditions under which it happened.

Here's my particulars:
2007 E90 335, March '07 build.
Approximately 1300 miles on the car, had had the car about a month. Driving on a city street, about 55mph (60mph limit), sunroof and sunshade closed.

All windows closed as well.

Anybody think of anything else that might be helpful to know?

Richard

The only thing is no glass falls on your head, it is all sucked straight up and out after the explosion. Again, if you experience it (I hope you never do) it is obviously not a piece of safety glass breaking from being hit. I assume many of you have seen and heard that before. This is a sponaneous catastrophic failure and the entire center of the glass simply self destructs in a very loud explosion.

By the way, they agreed to repair mine right away but it was the same BS of "good will" rather than warranty. I think the reason for that is they don't want to be responsible for damage to paint on your car or cars behind you. I made them throw in some oem alpine white touch up kit. I didn't get chips on my paint but I did on my roof spoiler.

Alright, so I got to thinking about the exploding sunroofs again. I went through the Lazerwash carwash yesterday and started thinking that if these roofs are so easy to break, or that they are under some kind of stress due to faulty manufacture (heat temper) or factory installation, why wouldn't the glass break when the lazerwash dryers come on? Those dryers are very powerful and put out way more pressure than any pressure differential when the car is at speed.

Well, I'm driving along on the highway, no other cars around, windows up, sunroof closed, AC on. Then, I heard what sounded like a shotgun go off. I could then hear air at the sunroof. Slid back the visor, and sure enough, the sunroof glass had exploded out of the car.

Took it into BMW the next day, dude says..."a rock hit it, call your insurance"...without even looking at the car. Eventually, he comes out to look at the car, along with their "specialist". He talks some bullsh!t, then tells me the they can't do anything for me. During the whole process, I'm being spoken to as if I'm an idiot.

I leave, then immediatly contact BMW North America. The guy I talk to there says he'll see what he can do. A few days later, the dealership calls me back and asks what my insurance said. I told him I didn't call my insurance, and that BMW NA told me to wait until I heard back from them. He then sighed and says, okay...we will cover it under "good will" but not under warranty.

I don't care, I just want it fixed. I drop it off, and to make matters worse they give me a Scion as a loaner.

Now, I go back to pick the car up a few days later (Friday). They pull the car up, and when I look inside, there is grease/grime all over the running boards, carpet and driver's side armrest (near the door handle). The lady working at the time cleans it all up, and did a good job...but underneath all the grime, the armrest is all scratched up. She informs me that my service guy is gone (it was 6:30) and that she'll leave a note for him about the problem, and I should hear from him on Monday.

Thursday rolls around and I still havent heard sh!t. So, I call the dealership, and of course, my service guy is "busy". I leave a message explaining the situation and ask for him to call me. Of course...he never calls me back.

Now, at this point I'm over the whole ordeal and now my wife and I are going out this weekend to shop for a new car, and trade in this damn BMW. I'm aware we're going to lose our asses on the trade in, but at least I won't have to deal with this crap again.

Sorry for the rant, just had to get it off my chest. I left out a LOT of details, but I would've ended up writing a dang novel. I searched the boards and saw that this happened to a few other guys. It can't just be a coincidence.

Thanks for listening.
Threaten to give them a bad rating when BMW calls. They hate it! Puts the fear of God in them!

In the guy's defense, his only choice for another dealership within 30 miles is Casey BMW. A family friend once took their car to casey bmw for an oil change, and they actually forgot to replace the oil they took out. The car died on the interstate. If you don't live in a major metropolitan area, dealerships unfortunately play a decent factor in what you drive.

Edit: tjnptel1, you actually LIKE casey bmw? That's got to be a first. I'll tell you though, the casey daughters are serious eye candy (I seriously hope no one from that family reads this forum)

Dude, did you loook at the photos, there was no glass laying anywhere it all blew OUTWARDS....!

Thats your first clue.

Simple logic dictates that the BMW e90 is a new vehichle and we have 5 instances of this happening, yet I was a member of the e46 board and never ready about this happening once.

I have rocks hit my windshield all the time and it doesnt SHATTER. The windsield is not parrallel to the ground but stand directly in the way of would be debris. It alot larger 4x and has more stress on it. Logic distates that seither it was defective....or something fell off an overpass from above or tossed super high in the air to come directly down on it.

What are the odds of this happening to 5 different BMW 335's over a 2 year period...?

It's a defect and BMW should be aware of this and finding a solution. But if that was me standing there when some asshole told me a rock hit it, I would've made an example of him on how stupid people can be and embarrassed him and the dealership with simple logic.

Mine just EXPLODED a couple of day ago!!!

Another one bite the dust!!!

Driving on the freeway and definitely no one or a big truck near me. All of a sudden I could hear some loud noise but didn't think it was anything until I felt some wind blowing hard on the top of my head.

After exiting the freeway, notice that my sunroof is gone. The left over looks like all the others picture in this thread. EXACTLY like the others picture!

I took my car to the dealer and after a couple days of inspection, they called me back and told me that it was caused by a rock because they saw the scratches on the little marble debris.

How funny is that? Someone or some rock with steroid pin point accuracy, flew and hit on the top of my sunroof while driving on the freeway!

Wow so now I am waiting for the BMW Customer Relation to call me. I know what they're probably gonna say but I will not give up especially knowing that I wasn't the only one. I say we all should do something about this. Stick together and file a lawsuit against BMW or something. This is crazy that they are blaming it on us.

Damn straight. Give the score that they deserve based on your service experience and expectations. If it screws the dealership, BMW NA or corporate will address when enough people tell the truth. Slightly off-topic, but any experience < absolute satisfaction is < 5 in my book - and should be in all of ours, regardless if the CA or SA smiles a lot and tries to make friends with you, or cries about his/her bonus...not the customer's problem.

Give 'em the score they deserve - without finding the rock that hit your windshield, how can they POSSIBLY say for sure it was an external factor rather than some issue w/ glass or mounting defects?

Looks like they need thicker glass to overcome the pressure differential between the cabin and the outside at speeds. Perhaps the air current over the roofline is such that it created enough vacuum that it shattered the moonroof?

Wow, I would go ape shit if my sunroof exploded and the dealer even attempted to give me lip about it. My lawyer would be on the phone so fast it would make their heads spin. Driving 70mph and having your sunroof explode isn't exactly safe.....and it could do more than just cause a near accident....
