I have been in the commercial building glass industry for 20+ years so I have learnt a thing or two.
The breakages are probably caused by nikel sulphide inclusion (NiS).
This is an extract from link below.....
"Over a certain period of time NiS will slowly convert to the original low temperature structure. This means the NiS increases in size, and the mechanical stresses caused by this cause the tempered pane to shatter, for no apparent reason (hence spontaneous glass breakage).[1]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel_sulfide_inclusion

I hope this helps.
Interesting. It has been my theory all along that the breakage is due to glass imperfections. Can you try to make some sense out of the fact that this phenomenon seems to be concentrated around MY 06+ BMW 3-series?

Also, I would assume that the outside surface of the glass is under tension, but why is there always a hole in the center? Is it because the tension is highest in the center of the pane?

Just found this thread. This is some wild stuff, you'd think at the velocity of glass exploding the company would make a recall on these cars. It's dangerous for everybody in the cabin and then around them and then at speed other people's vehicles as well.

ugh, this happened to me the day after I got my new to me 335d. I was just getting in front of someone when it happened and I bet they were none too happy about the glass shower they undoubtedly received. I have never heard of anything like this happening and ive been around a few moonroofs. Luckily my dealership got it covered under good faith from BMW.

For what it's worth, the exploding sunroof phenomenon isn't limited to just BMW's. My sister's Honda CR-V sunroof spontaneously blew out as well while driving along the expressway.

man that's some scary stuff. How is there not a recall on that. I guess they're waiting for it to cause a death before doing anything.

it's not an epidemic guys...

its faulty glass or poor design. my money is own faulty/substandard quality glass.

BMW is more prone to this.

BMW needs to take the high road and cover these occurrances. Unfortunately its easy for them to say user error not my responsibility.

Two of my buddies had this happen. One was a corolla and one was a Subaru. The passenger window shattered on the Subaru, though. While the car was parked. Very strange.

Unhappy BMW 323i Sunroof Explosion

I know this is an old post; however, I went searching to see if anyone else has experienced this ordeal and I found this! I couldn't believe it wasn't just me. 3 days ago I was driving down the interstate with my sunroof open (up not across), there were no cars directly in front of me and all the sudden out of no where it sounded like someone shot a shotgun through one of my windows. I about got in an accident because it scared the hell out of me. Glass went flying everywhere in my car and I looked up and my sunroof had exploded! A huge piece of glass out of the middle of the sunroof came crashing in and the rest of the glass exploded. It cut up the leather interior of my car and I had glass fragments all over in my skin, hair and eye. I had to go to the doctor the remove the particle from my eye and am now hoping there was no major damage to my eye as I continue to use drops and have it patched. Everyone I told about this thinks I'm crazy. "Oh there must have been a rock or something that hit it". I said there wasn't any cars in front of me to throw up a rock that high and coincidentally hit my sunroof hard enough to shatter it! After reading that others have experienced this, I think it a defaulted sunroof but how do you prove that? It now is going to cost me over $900 to fix because BMW won't allow any auto glass repair shops to fix it. I have to go through the dealership which is over priced and won't replace only the glass even though nothing is wrong with the rest of it. They said they have to replace the entire sunroof! What a bunch of crap! How do these incidents get reported to BMW? I'm just thankful I didn't crash and even more thankful that I didn't have my kids in the car!!

I'm frankly sick of sunroofs anyhow- I may be the minority, but I actually use mine about twice a year if that, and its just because its there.

At least the one on my e36 is metal- who wants the constant greenhouse effect of a glass sunroof?

I would much rather have the headroom and lose the weight of this useless "must have" feature.

Might have to do with temperature difference in summer from hot upper side of glass and cold inside of car.

Ill make sure keep my side open a tiny to help cool it down.

Are your center vents facing up at sun roof? Having it like that might cause it.

Off subject Ive seen friends cobalt windshield crack out of nowhere during winter when he turned on heater full blast.

This is interesting, and something I want to avoid. How exactly did this happen? I would think if it's that cold outside to chill the glass cold enough to react that way to heat, the motor is very cold too. Wouldn't it take some time for the heat to rise (and gradually at that, right?)?

This was in idaho at time with about 2inches of snow on window when he did it.

Under normal winter conditions like just cold I dont see that happening.

I hate to hear this, but it seems, to me at least, that the vast majority of BMW dealerships are completely incompetent when it comes to customer service. It's funny how BMW prides itself on being a high end luxury brand but when it comes down to it the service is ridiculously subpar. I have had similar experiences as OP with technicians and dealership employees treating me like an infant, idiot, waste of time, etc. I feel for you OP, you buy a premium car that is supposed to be superior quality and then your sunroof explodes, dealership treats you like shit, have a long ordeal to get anywhere, and to top it off they damage your car.

BMW is aware of the issue and I even got the attention of a "special investigator" with my case. But sadly, like someone else suggested, it will probably require casualties before anything is done about it.

I am convinced that temperature, or sudden temperature changes, has nothing to do with it. Tinting may be beneficial though to keep the glass together if/when the glass shatters.

I dont think it is temperature, when it happened to me it was about 76 outside and I had the temp set to 74 like I always do and I had been driving in the same conditions for at least 15 minutes.

Just curious about those who's SR's have exploded, do you use the key fob to lower the w2indows? I noticed that sometimes when I use the fob to open the windows the sunroof starts to open very slightly and I wonder if it is left like this while driving if it causes a weird pressure situation?

I immediately pulled over check the sunroof and the damage looks identical to the others posted on this thread.

Initially i thought a rock must have chipped up and shattered it but after finding this thread i cant help but feel it was self induced. I got a few quotes to fix it around the $150-$200 range but i would like to find a DYI to see if its something i can take care of. Anyone know where I can find a DYI to just replace the glass?

BTW, I'm not interested in pursuing a claim with the local dealer or insurance company. That may take time and i really don't have the time or patience for some of the BS i might hear. Additionally, I need the car for work.

Thanks in advance
Guys, how did you manage to suck out all the broken glass in the sunroof cassette? I still here some rattling in there whenever I make quick turns. It's getting on my nerves.
