Co-Op Shop?

Probably a huge stab in the dark here, but I heard somewhere that there's a growing trend of co-op'ing small auto shops. Basically, automotive enthusiasts pool money together, lease a small shop and then either share the shop among themselves, or sell out "time shares" so that those without tools/lifts/etc can work on their own cars without having to pay crazy labor prices, or thousands in shop materials. Basically a rent-a-shop kind of thing.

Has anyone ever heard of the concept? Has anyone heard of anything like that in the area? Anyone even remotely interested?

Stuff like walnut shell blasting, vinyl wrapping, aftermarket part installs, even tuning come to mind.

Thanks! Kinda pricey and too far away, but very much the type of thing I was thinking of.

I'm not so sure. I mean just the fact that they exist is indicative of some level of interest (I actually first heard about it on a segment one of those nightly news types of shows a while ago). To each his own though.

As a consumer, I would find value of paying say $100 to be able to install my own DP's in the proper environment, avoiding the $250+ or whatever it costs a shop to do it for me.

As a businessman, I can definitely see the potential. At that kent guy's rates, just one rack can pull over $9k a month at 100% occupancy (obviously one wouldn't assume 100% occupancy, especially initially). That's gotta pay the bills and offer a quick return on the initial investment it'd take. Get a few financially secure guys together and I find it to be quite do-able without needing a ton of cash up front (relative to other new business opportunities that is).

WRT broadening the audience a bit, That Kent one even has hireable mechanics. This brings possibilities, like being able to develop a relationship with a good sr. mechanic whom you trust to do work on your car that could even be a full time mechanic somewhere else. Or what about also having a cheaper, less experienced guy that just handles maintenance? A complementary shuttle perhaps? lol
